MG TD TF 1500 - Packing between tub and frame

Restoring 1954 mgtf. Putting tub back onto frame next weekend. There was packing between them when I took it apart. Is the packing supposed to run along the tub whereever it meets the frame? Where is it for sale?

The packing was rotted on my TD. I used pieces of solid white nylon at each attach point of the body to the frame.

Ed: I think you are refering to the shims that are used at the points where the tub (via the "body frame") attaches to the the frame. When I disassembled my 52TD the factory or PO had used a high density rubber at each point. They probably help reduce noise. However, there real purpose is to adjust the body so that the doors are alligned. They actually allow you to warp the tub. I bought a 2" roll of high durometer, high abrrasion-resistance material from McMaster-Carr. It seemed to do the job.

Dave: What is the width and what is the height of what you used? Did you glue it in place? (Neither door closed correctly before I took the tub off. I bet it will be a challenge to get them to close right on reassembly.)

I used 2X3 inch (plus or minus). The thickness is something you play with (by adding and removing same) as you try to get the doors alligned. That is the absolutely most difficult thing you will have to do and I suggest that you read through the archives on the subject. There has been a lot written. I placed the tub on the frame and attached it to the front pillars. Then I played with shims under the center of the doors and flexed the body back using clamps till I had it right. BUT, read the archives, there are many more adjustments (hinges, hinge shims, door warp, etc.) I used all of them to get it right. Good luck.
