MG TD TF 1500 - part identification ?
I need some help to ID a couple of NOS parts I picked up yesterday at the Carlilse Import show. I thought they were for an TD/TF but they are not the same. The part # is Lucas 54211711, generator end plate. I don't have a Lucas book to check it but just thought someone might, or is there a web site that would (might) list this part #. The end plate has the brass oiler port and threaded end to mount the tach drive, but the back is more open design and has a modern brass spade terminal not the post & nut style. Is this a later style? The box was marked MGA but I don't think A's had a tach drive in this manner. Thanks in advance tfp |

Hi Tom - just a quick thought - 'frog-eyed' A H Sprites had the same tach. drive - possibly early midgets too - this would tie in with the spade connectors which were coming in in the late '50s. I'm sure someone with more detailed knowledge and the Lucas parts book will help. Suggest you keep it anyway - the original items are as rare as rocking horse *** ! Cheers John. |

Tom, According to my Lucas book, this is not a TC/TD/TF end plate. All 3 share 54214584. Nor is it an MGA - 54211125. I even looked in a later BMC/Lucas X-reference book without success. But you may be right. It could be a later replacement by another supplier. If you can find an unused generator, why not try to fit it? Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Gents, Another two cents. I'll be broke soon. Between TDs I restored a 1959 Bugeyed Sprite. One task was to replace the generator front cover because the PO had broken off the ear. I remember disassembling, cleaning and reassembling the generator and this early Bugeye 948cc did not have a spade connector. Being an electronic type by vocation this kind of thing sticks in my brain. Strange what one remembers and what one forgets. Jim Haskins 1953 MD TD |

Tom, I have a 1974 Lucas replacement generator (bought new from Moss mid-70s) with an aluminum end plate, spade terminal, brass oiler, and the tach drive threaded area. The threads are shorter than the original. No part number visible. Could that be what you have? George |

TOM; George mentioned that the threads on his end plate were shorter. I believe that the shorter threaded ones were for bug-eyes and early midgets. The tach drives are different. Sandy Sanders Hudson Florida |

I had some time to mess with the end plate yesterday. Other than the back being 'more open' it works fine, all the specs are the same except for the spade terminal. I think this will work OK in a pinch but of course is not correct. I would still be interested to find out what this # is correct for 54211711. Also still looking to find a web site for LUCAS numbers if one exists. thanks tom |
