MG TD TF 1500 - Pedal Box Part

On my '53 TD there is a short cylindrical item on the inboard aft bottom of my pedal box. It is secured by a nut from below. Can someone identify this part and its function? It's in my way trying to adjust the master cylinder push rod to get more pedal free play.
