MG TD TF 1500 - Pedal Box - what utility, if any?

I have just finished rebuilding the linkage to my clutch, a job I truly hate as I lie on my 80 yr old back (ouch!).

The more I look at it, I am wondering just what utiltiy the pedal box serves? I can't see that it offers any structrual compliment, and with all the openings, does it really protect the bearing/bushing surfaces?

The only value I can see, is that if one goes off the road, or the chassis scrapes the ground or a rock, THEN it might protect the brake lever.

What if I cut it off entirely? Any suggestions?

Most of the old American cars I've worked on over the years,(20s,30s,40s), had the same basic set up without the box. As I remember, the shafts and bushings were larger. I see no reason for the box, other than a place to bolt up the master cylinder on these cars. They could have bolted it to the chassis as well. And, while comparing old American cars to the British, how about the British way of torquing up the front wheel bearings using spacers and shims, an issue that some say it must be that way and swear to it! There was never an American car set up that way that I know of, the front bearings were basically hand tight with no shims or spacers. Never a problem. What I trying to say is, we get used to a design and from that we except it and consider it law! I personally think common sense gets thrown out the window at times with some very knowledgeable engineers and structural designers while designing this stuff. But, I've learned it's a no win situation with engineers, they will never agree to anything where it might interfere with their design, good or bad. JMHO. PJ

I had the same thoughts Gordon when I got around to reconstructing this box. The only reasons I could come up with was the return spring and the pedal stop.

Hello Gord I will refrain from adding any additional comments on the pedal box issue . More than likely there is little to be said that has not already been said . However , I must acknowledge that it does serve a useful purpose, well covered in your comments. Rather than permanently removing it completely just re-design the component to facilitate simple removal and re- installation. John

Good pic LaVerne. Good to have. I'm certainly going to consider it, but will have someone else do it for me. Even with the floor boards out, I doubt I could survive very long in the foot-well!

And I like Dick Cavey's suggestion too - mayne combine both ideas.
