MG TD TF 1500 - pedal pads

The clutch and brake pedals of my TD3966 have rectangular tops with a flat little piece of rubber glued on them. These tops are "lying" on the pedals and the dimensions are appr. 1,96" x 1,57".
I'm looking for new pedal pads but in the catalogues of the usual suppliers I've noticed that the offered pedal pads are "standing" and oval shaped.

My question is: are my pedal tops original? Or, to put it in another way: do the oval pedal pads fit the rectangular tops?

Hi Jasper,

As far as I know oval pads are the original fitting - eg see illustration on page 17 of the Operation Manual (Drivers Handbook). Note RHD cars don't normally have the pedal extensions illustrated, although they could be fitted - personal choice!

Thanks for your prompt reply! You're right, meanwhile I saw the drawing in the Workshop Manual.

Probably the 'desperate' PO in the early fifties modified the extensions because I know he had difficulties to cope with both pedals (foot size? or as you say no extensions fitted?). See pic.

Actually my car is a RHD. Do you happen to know why Abingdon deviated between RHD en LHD for the extensions?

Hi Jasper,

Our North American friends will know more than me, but I understand it's simply linked with the use of the sunken heel tray found on LHD cars ie your feet were then further away from the standard pedal. Why that was felt necessary on LHD cars I don't know - customer feedback from N A customers?

Hi Jasper,
a previous owner probably extended the pads to get room to rest their clutch foot under the pedal.
I found that when I fitted sound mat under the carpet covering the tunnel I had nowhere to rest my foot alongside the tunnel.
My modification was to rotate the pads 180deg and fit on the RH side of the pedals (maybe my big feet are the problem).

Hi Ray,

Your point is a good one - my fairly slim foot will just go behind the clutch pedal, but only with certain pairs of shoes! Have you ever thought of getting extensions for your pedals? or are you quite happy with your current solution.

I just received an answer from one of the suppliers. He says that I have TC expansions on my TD.
And, like Ray pointed out, probably in combination with a 90deg or 180deg rotation to get more room...

I was happy for the first 39 years then fitted new carpets and sound mat,now I have moved the pedal over I am happy again :-)

I had the extensions on my TF but took them off to get more room. At times, my left foot still gets caught under the headlight dipper bracket. Even when driving with "driving slippers."

Yeah I drive with slippers too but I have size 15 (50) shoes :-)

Here's a photo of my pedal extensions-it makes a hell of a difference.
