MG TD TF 1500 - Pertronix Ignition

Has anyone any experience of fitting one of these in the distributor on a mg tf 1250 1954 car.
L Bennett

L,
To answer your question Yes it has been done. If you search the archives you will find many, many people who have done this conversion, to both TD's and TF's. You will also find many, many pros and cons concerning any type of electronic ignition vs the good ol'' points,,,

If your Petronix dies you are stuck.
In our local Octagon car group most of us have Boyer Bransden modules, I think 9 units. If it should die you only have to move 2 wires to go back to original.
It retains the points as a trigger only. Mine has been on over 10 years still on the same points never adjusted.
Better starting and fuel consumption.
Also cheaper
It will discretely hide under the indicator relay box

No problem with that installation. I presently have 16 years on my pertronix Igniter. Bud

I have had the Pertronix on both our MGB and TD for about 10 years. The only problem I have had when some bonehead (who shall forever remain nameless) reconnected the wires to the ignition coil after doing some work on the MGB and proceeded to turn the ignition on, incinerating the Pertronix module. I have since replaced the original Pertronix with the MKII version that is protected from reverse connection. Cheers - Dave

Where can you get Boyer Bransden in the USA? Their website lists only two dealers, both wholesale only...

Yes I have a Pertronix in my 54 TF..positive ground. It does not use the points so I'm not sure what Ray has. I wouldn't buy another but would instead go to a more reliable Crane myself. The unit will not fire if it has less than 12 volts which has happened to me while cranking the car. Swapping out the points plate that I carry is not a matter of just changing them out and on your way. With the positive ground set up, the timing will be way off from the points so the ignition timing would have to be reset as well as packing the needed wiring to put it back to a points configuration.

Just my two cents.

Five seasons with Pertronix and a true believer! Critical voltage seem to around 10,9 volts. I have installed a Lucas c39 look a like alternator and an electronic battery tender so low voltage is not my problem. I also use a Pertronix fame thrower coil.

Goeff,
I believe that the Boyer Bransden still uses the points as a breaker,,,

Yes Steve.
it only uses the points as a trigger virtually no load on them. The distributer remains untouched so IF the unit fails then all you have to do is swap around the connections and away you go.
One even survived in a friends car when the battery was put in the wrong way round.

I like the sound of the Boyer Brandsen just because it is easily removeable and doesn't require messing with the distributor. But I still can't find it available in the USA...
