MG TD TF 1500 - Pertronix problems

I am converting my TF 1500 to neg ground as I have acquired an alternator conversion from Race Mettled in UK .

I Therefore had to buy a neg ground pertronix kit to replace the pos ground kit I have been running with for three years. As it were, there was no rotor in the package from Moss. Am I right that the rotor is just a plastic ring with magnets installed, and not polarity sensitive? In that case I can reuse the old one?

Jan, we ran into this recently. It seems to say that Pertronix has changed their system to one where the electronic package is sensing the distributor lobes rather than using a Hall effect device to sense the magnets. Hence, no more magnet collar (rotor). I haven't seen one of the new ones to know this as fact. I'd suggest just following their installation directions, and see if it works. I'd love to see a copy of their installation instructions. Good luck. Bud

You are right! The Pertronix catalogue says " an “ls” suffix indicates a lobe sensor version. lobe sensor technology senses the point cam, and does not use a magnet sleeve or ring."

Hope it will work , and then I have a pos ground pertronix kit for sale

Please report your results....I have a Pertronix in "Rocky", (pos ground), and wondered about the "new" style , without the collar.

I have just fitted the new type petronix to my MGYA it fits on the back plate, n the same place as the points and is a lot closer to the cams.

I had some trouble fitting the rota arm as the Red all singing and dancing rota arm is slightly too big on the external diameter and will not fit on because of the closeness of the petrinox unit .

I had to file a little (020 thou ish ) off the outside diameter of the rotor arm to give some clearance to the petrinox unit. Once I had done this it fitted ok with around 008 thou clearance. Interestly I had an old original british rota that fitted ok it was a little smaller on the outside diameter.

I do not know how it works yet as I still rebuilding my YA and have not fitted the fuel system yet, but fingers crossed.

I have used the old petrinox system on my TD and was very happy with its performance. I hope the new type is equally as good .

Cheers Chris

The kit is a nice fit. I hope to finish the rest of my electrical work within a week or so, I will report back on how it works.

Thank you for helping me out on understanding the new kit!
