Well, he DID say the car was last restored in 1984. Rubber more that 20 years old is likely to be rotted. The ad says the car is in Vermont, so it may last longer due to the colder climate. Here in Texas, rubber turns to powder in about that time.

Just because a car looks good doesn't mean that it won't have to be worked on. It seems almost better to get one that looks a little tatty and be able to negotiate a good price than to get a fantastic looker that has a lot of lurking mechanical problems. You're going to have to work on both cars, but at least with the tatty one, you can negotiate a more realistic price.

The best case, of course, would be to get a recent restoration. These almost always always sell for less than the cost of getting the work done.

I didn't follow my own advice. I bought a completely trashed example in 2001, that I finally finished this year, at the cost of many hours, $$$, bloody knuckles, and anxiety. In the end, it was worth it, but never again!

P.S. Next project vehicle is already bought and in storage, waiting for me to start on it. I am such a liar!

Curious, what are you planning.. what type of car?

My next project is a Triumph ... Bonneville.

It should be relatively easy after the TF, but I'm looking at a botched attempt at an engine rebuild, that caused the cycle to be put into a leaky shed for 20 years. It's going to be a challenge.

After the motorcycle, I'll be looking for a TC ... Maybe about 2008.

Interesting that there are no photos wihth the top up and side curtains in place. Does it have any? But it does look better than some that have been put up. (gaiters aside)

Nup don't think so - from same eBay listing...

"and side curtains do not exist, these were never installed when restored in 1987 and they were never missed. Anyone who has driven a T series in the rain will tell you they serve little purpose. They are easily obtainable used or new, with little effort."
