MG TD TF 1500 - Plug in gas line... Tank filter?
I had a weird thing happen earlier this year. 1952 MG TD I went to start up the TD after a few months and the fuel pump would just run and run. Apparently no fuel getting to the carbs. After a bunch of debug work I disconnected the fuel pump and blew compressed air through the fuel line to the tank. I heard bubbles in the tank, re-connected it to the pump and then everything worked. So apparently the fuel line got plugged somewhere. I inherited the car in 2005 and it has been running fine for all these years, and I've never found much stuff in the fuel pump filter in the last 11 years (and nothing now). I've heard that there might be a fuel filter in the fuel line as it comes out of the bottom of the fuel tank? Anyone have experience with looking at that or having it plug? Thanks, Scott |

Absolutely it is your first line of defense, second is the one at the bottom of the pump and last there is one in the inlet of the carb float bowl lid. |

I also would confirm the existance of a "in tank" filter. My car (54 TF)had so much rust in it that I've resorted to having the tank cut open at the back to expose the baffles and ensure a thorough blasting and then re welding. You would not know the tank had been touched.Total cost apart from the respray £150 by a radiator repair specialist.A highly recommended method of treatment. |

Here is one out of a TC that had been sitting for 40 years with the same fuel in it. When I restored my TF the screen looked this bad or worse so I just cut it out. It seemed like a good idea at the time. A couple of years later I discovered that it wasn't. I was on an event drive 250 miles from home and the car started starving for fuel and after screwing around with it for half a day I got a cab back to the hotel and got the truck and trailer and went and picked it up. When I got it home it seemed to have healed itself but the symptoms came back about a month later. I finally pulled the fuel line and just a drop or two came out the bottom of the tank. I stuck a wire in and something popped out along with a big flow of gas. It turned out that at some point a bee had gotten inside the tank and was stuck it the opening. If I had the screen in there it wouldn't have happened.

My inline fuel filter was completely decayed. I bought some copper screen on eBay and built a new one. If gunk is getting into your line you should check the filter but also examine the interior of the tank... Fr |

Highly likely you have narrowed down the problem to pickup in tank. This is so common over these years you should expect to find almost anything except how it originally came on the car from new. This- that- or some other design is likely what you find. |
