MG TD TF 1500 - Polishing Chrome
My 53TD was delivered tonite! Wow! I am psyched!! The car has been sitting in a barn since 1968. The chrome parts are very grungy, with a greenish caste. I thought they were beyond hope, but my mechanic suggested we try to polish the chrome. To my surprise, with 0000 steel wool and some mild polish (and a lot of rubbing), we discovered decent chrome under the filmy grunge! What do other TD owners recommend to polish up very old, grungy chrome? it would be fantastic to salvage rather than have to replate these parts! Ira |

On chromed steel, a brillo or sos pad (the steel wool type with the blue soap- NOT the green pad things) works great, and also on the larger brass parts (windsheild frame, etc.). Use with running water, and use light pressure. Chrome polish is not much help with the really old thick grungy stuff. The windshield frame parts, and the dash chrome on a TF restored cleaned up beautifully- it also came from a barn- parked in '68 or so! Semichrome (sp?) polish is excellent for fine-tuning, as well as brass- available at you local Harley or bike shop. |

When I brought my car out of 22 yrs of storage it had the same green grunge. Don't use steel wool, any metal or brillo pads as it will scratch the chrome however fine a grade you use. I use either "Lido-Polish" @ HD or Simichrome paste polish. Use a soft nylon toothbush and get some 3M Scotchbrite pad that are use in polish fine wood finishes. The finest grade you can get. They are white in color, not the green stuff. Only use pads lightly. |
