First thing to my mind is WOW! Second thing it's just like my collection plus about 15,000 things. Are those real engines on dolly carts, complete, if so the mga twin cam is as scarce as hens teeth and should go for a lot? Again Wow! John

Yikes and WOW!!! My 1932 MGJ2 was previously owned by Gene Ponder (around 1986) and shows the meticulous standard of all of Gene's cars.

RM have their description of the 3 Doepke MGT models incorrect! Nothing on the Doepkes was ever "chrome plated". You can polish the bumpers and grille/headlamp overriders so that they shine almost like chrome. Also there is no detailing done on the models. Which is fine for an 'original' model collector. The headlamps are not "plastic covered" they are molded in plastic. $800-1500 seems sorta high based on what's been selling on ebay. You can go to http://community.webshots.com/user/52mgtd
and see pics of some of my models that I have to dispose of because I am now on 24hr oxygen and can't restore them any more, no more grinding, painting, etc. so off to good homes they will go I hope. grimmye

I don't mean to be pushy, but if somebody out there was planning on giving me about 2 or 3 million dollars because I'm..... well just because then now would be a good time. Even though I have a deep affliction for MG's I'd say I have to give the XKE my priority.

These comments pertain to only the MG items.
Note that many of the cars (MG's) are "recreations" of famous models. Read the final paragraphs, one of the SA Dropheads started life as a sedan. The K-3 is a recreation not an original K-3. (And I don't think the factory ever used chrome wire wheels on their competition cars) There is a fantastic collection of "things" but many of those items are not what one could call the original in the strictest sense of the word. Some of the badges although nice are not all that rare. I have many of them myself. I'm not criticizing the collection but rather questioning the assumed value of many of the item lots.
Side personal note, why would anyone paint such a hideous color combination on that beautiful Airline
Coupe?
It's also interesting to note that the PA, Leonidas, replica (former Dancing Daughters PA) is not in the group being sold. That is a replica of the Miles Collier car which is in the Collier Museum in Florida. There was only one of those built.

I would really look good in one of the old racing helmets that they are selling. Oh well, I can dream.

Who is Gene Ponder?
Jeff McWhirter

You ask who is Gene Ponder? I lived in Texas in the mid - 80's. I went to the the equivalent of the Texas MG GoF. I took my self-restored TF to the meet, it looked pretty good with only 5 years since I restored it. I did not know anyone there and did not expect to win. There was a man and wife (turns out to be Mr. Ponder) who had flown in to attend, had an employee drive their new Jaguar there so they would have wheels, and had his MG's transported in. He had a beautiful TC (I could be wrong but think it was a TC) that would not start and they had to push it. He also had a very nice TF.

My TF came from S.H. Arnolt in Chicago and still has the original plastic Arnolt dealer plate under the bonnet, attached with contact cement - although I now have it better secured. I have never seen another one. Mr Ponder approached me and wanted to buy the plate. I said it is not for sale. He looked incredulous and indignately said something to the effect that everything is for sale. I believe he offered me $500. He then turned nice and asked if he could borrow it to copy. By then my normal spirit of cooperation was gone, as I was getting bad vibes from the arrogance, but I politely declined. He turned and walked away with an unpleasant expression. It was one of the very few and the most unpleasant experience I have encountered over my 30 years in the MG circle.

Other people around had slight grins on their faces, and semed supportive. and apparently knew who he was. All I knew was that he was some rich guy with an attitude, I didn't know he had a collection. I learned that he owned a large cabinet factory business. As I understand it, he was self made and very successful. Maybe he was just having a bad day, as I never met him again.

Oh, my TF won First Place in the state of Texas that day and I am looking at the pewter plate on my wall! This is the first time I have written about this experience, so glad you asked! We all have our bad moments and I will give Mr. Ponder the benefit of the doubt this was just one of his - he likely is used to getting his way, and just didn't deal with it very well.

Shazzam Sgrt. Carter! ...That sure is a nice collection!
One that caught my eye and I have to ask:
PG 5 Lot 1121 ????
Has anybody on this BBS ever seen these?
(the stained glass piece)

I would expect a few "yes" answers, as I know an artist (quite well actually) that has been making them for a few years.
I have the 1st 3 of those hanging in my office...but have never seen any others till now! My wife is going to lose it when she see's the "expected" price!

I have one of the stained glass MG's hanging in my ofice window also. It was made by one of our local club members. I know he didn"t charge $500.00 for them.

Maybe I'm still on drugs from my knee surgery, but I see $59 on the item, not $500.

Keith:
Living in Texas in the mid 80's did you ever come across a blue & blue 1932 MGJ2 which at that time was owned by Gene Ponder? It might have been at one of those shows. I now own that car Reg#RV2595.

To F. Healey - I lived in Waco for only under 3 years - Most of the Snickers Bars are made there. I was there to help start Skittles and Starburst candies - I was too successful and Mr. Mars moved me to the home office in NJ where I retired in 2003. So I never went to any other MG gatherings during that time - Texas is so spread out that they had this one annual meet down the road in a little town. Never saw the J2 but you are one lucky guy! Love to see your car sometime. Ponder seemed to restore them well. I never saw him actually drive an MG during the meet.

In the memorbelia section, lot 2092, automotive badges, the is my clubs original car badge right in the middle of 12 -14 various badges.
(i.e. The Southeastern MG T Register badge from about 1970-80). What a surprise ---- and how expensive!!!
Don Harmer

Dave,
Don't be confused my wife gets quite a bit less for the ones she makes (does it more for love of the Margue than proffit) Several people have seen mine and asked her to make them one. I had never seen anything like it till now and was wondering if there had actually been a company that had made them! ...the $500 I said after looking at the one in the Ponder Auction that shows an "estimated" value of $500/$800 for the glass work and several belt buckles as part of lot #1121.
$59.00 is what she has for opening bid on one she made that I put the link to on ebay. She got into stained glass years ago making some repairs to the tressal windows over the doors in our house. She found an auto glass shop that had a bunch of old glass removed from a church they tore down years ago ..but I think she is about at the end of that now ....and like some of the newer parts for our cars ..the new stuff is just not the same. The first one she gave me on fathers day as a suprise.
Hope the knee heels nicely for you!

Seamus,

Love the colors of your J2. Do you by any chance know what the color number are? If so, I'd like to use them on a vintage racer I'm building if you don't mind. Please contact me off list.

Thanks,
Gene

Gene:
The colors on my J2 are Cambridge blue and Oxford blue. They are original factory colors used through mid 30s on Js, PAs & PBs. Unfortunately, MG didn't start keeping paint formulas until 1938. I haven't seen any tables that show modern paint equivalents.

Seamus,
Thanks...maybe with the names I can come up with a formula somewhere.

Gene:
A very close match to the darker blue (Oxford) is a Chrysler color DS CC 307 Nightwatch Blue. I can send you actual chips of both colors that I had made up at the local Ace Hdwr. for minor touch-up purposes. If you want email me your mailing address. jffh206@earthlink.net

Keith Murphy has Mr. Ponder down pat....my only advice to anyone is that you are planning to bid on any thing in that auction: DON'T!! It is probably an even bigger scam than his previous auction....I was there.
Terry Sanders

Seamus,

I wanted to let you know that your color chip arrived today...they're exactly what I was looking for. Rather than thanking you here I could have just emailed you back and said "Thanks" but I think the group should know how quick you were to oblige me and how appreciative I am.

Again, thanks so much...

Did anyone get to the Ponder auction? Or has anyone heard about how things did or did not sell? If so what were the results and did the cars get the prices that were expected and quoted? If anyone has a link to the results I would appreciate getting it.

Thanks in advance

George,
The link I just posted was from one of the items from the Pomder Auction. I found it from the orginial link at begining of this thread. They have all the results posted there. I was curious to see what this piece went for.
