MG TD TF 1500 - Poorly represented E-Bay TD

Saw this on this morning.
176 miles since full restoration? Come on, I know it is caviot emptor (sp?, but this is bull.

Engine looks like 53, but speedo's and gauges are early TD. L

I agree. I was thinking they must have been a tough 176 miles considering the rust spots on the rear springs.

I think it is a case of 'one man's restoration is another man's spruce up'. Overspray, greasy engine components, unfinished air cleaner; that might be rust, or that might be primer on the rear springs.

I would treat this as an unrestored vehicle if I were considering it.

Interesting claims...

"This car has 156 miles on a full restoration" Translation: the odometer is stuck -assuming the speedo works at all.

I suppose in Westfield, Indiana "Absolutely no rust anywhere on this vehicle" could mean no rusted-through body panels!

I think you guys are being a little hard on the seller. It looks to me like the owner had a lot of work done on the car, probably paid a lot to have it done, drove it very little. Maybe drove through a puddle or 2. It would bring more if it was cleaned up a little better under the hood and frame rails polished (did I really say that?) and a little oil brushed on the springs. The quality of the body work under the paint and wood condition are chances you'd take if you couldn't inspect the car. Ask lots of questions and hope for good answers.

So what is your estimate of a fair price for this car? 9K US? I wouldn't mind having it, from the pics.

Doing a few repairs isn't the same as restoring a vehicle. A lot of work done on a car doesn't mean a lot if you have to take it apart to fix things adjacent to the 'work' that was done. The level of repair doesn't even come close to the definition of restore in my opinion. I read somewhere once that a restoration includes removing each component on a car, disassembling, fixing and renewing, painting and replacing as needed to acheive the reliability and factory new appearance of a new car.

The group has talked in the past about 100 point cars that don't even have fluids in them lest they leak. Very fine and beautiful restorations that are drivers, and decent restorations which are similar to owning a two year old car.

How much is this car worth? If the wood is good, and you still have to take it apart and rebuild everything else, maybe US$9k. As you said, it would take a careful inspection. But I doubt any one would look at these photos and think this car is restored.

I would say that any T series that is running, and has had a body/paint job, new interior and is "clean" is going to go for above $10,000. As it is a TF, i would think $15,000 range?
If it had been listed as "Very Clean mgtf, new paint, new interior" would it be more appealing?

As often is the case, you are right regarding your comments on the interior. I will agree that under those circumstances, the TD is worth at least US$10K.

However, if it had said "Very Clean MGTF" I would have questioned the seller's knowledge further, because it is a TD. But I do get your point, and I'll answer this way... I think an honest appraisal from a seller is always more appealing than hyperbole. Exageration makes one leery. Factual statements makes one comfortable. So yes, it would be more appealing.

Your right...(sorry about the TF part...duh!)... and i agree... i like things toned down a bit... and would rather read about the faults then the "restoration" part...
I just recieved the "numbers" for this one a few minutes ago... it was on my list as located in "St. Charles, MI" now selling out of "Westfield, Indiana".
I sent a note to that TF seller the other day...think the auction must be over by now? and he said he would send more photos....haven't got any yet? I think that might have been the sleeper of the month?

My guess is that the tub was removed and restored, but the chassis was left as an un-restored rolling chassin c/w axles, suspension, wheels and steering gear.

Well, the price isn't moving much at the moment. I'd give twice the present bid in the blink of an eye. Maybe if he had showed a before and after from a barn find, you guys would appreciate what has been done to the old girl. I do. I think she's real purty, even if her underware are a little soiled. Maybe that's what appeals to me...hmm...

Tom, I'm with you on this one.....
I wouldn't kick her out of "my garage" for "drinking cream or eating crackers"!
Pretty nice looking car (IMHO) I've seen several of those "fiberglass things" with the large "boot in the bonnet" area and an engine in the "fuel tank" go for better $ than what is being offered for this one!
