MG TD TF 1500 - prices of recycled parts on ebay
i don't want to offend anyone on this forum who maybe trying to make a couple of bucks parting out TD's...but it seems to me there are some outrageous asking prices on some of these used body parts and mechanical pieces...or is it just me? regards, tom |

You should see s/h parts prices over here in the UK for Triumph TR5's!!! OMG!!!!!!!!! Any classics genuine nos, mint or very good original part is more desirable than a repro part that has to be made to fit! |

Some of the prices do seem high. It all depends on if he/she has a part I REALLY need, and how badly I NEED it NOW. At that point the price is less important. My first place to look though, is the Moss catalog, usually the same or cheaper than the gougers. If the part I need is made of unobtanium, I head over to ebay. That said and prices aside, good used or NOS is always my preference. Bob; |

It's not just British car parts, the high prices from some people has been going on since ebay and other sale sites started. If someone is lucky enough to get a higher than normal price for an item, everyone who has the same item thinks they have a gold mine in the making! I tried to buy a set of bonnets for my TF a couple years ago. As soon as a fellow found out I wanted a set, he jumped in with a price half of what a new set would have cost, (if they were available)! Price gougers, I don't deal with them. Another fellow, who is a member of this forum sold me a nice set for a very fair price. I am a member of three British car forums and only buy from forum members because there is a trust there not present when dealing with other people. Sorry but, I don't deal with most EBay/Cregslist sellers, unless I know them. But, that's just me. PJ |

Lot of people ask reasonable prices (to me). Many others think they have gold and are way outta wack. The ones that really piss me off are the flippers..think American Pickers. Low ball the crap outta anything they buy and mark it it up retail and more. Same goes for yard sale buyers. Always looking to low ball and then turn around and sell it at their own sale the following week. I've given instructions to my survivors to price my stuff at a reasonable price when I'm gone and not take a penny less. Whatever doesn't sell I want piled in the field out back and set on fire. Screw the bargin hunters. |

I agree with the above. That said, the law of supply and demand applies, and if someone freely pays, whatever. There are still many bargains to find on ebay, especially true factory BMC/Lucas NOS parts that show up from time to time. I have had virtually perfect success with buying on ebay from many different vendors, knock on wood! I do fear many parts such as the internal tranny odds and ends will end up in the trash. I think they would have done better selling the whole box. George |

"it's not just British car parts"... Amen to that! (Mailbox ran out in from of the wife's car.) Mit's 3000 GT plastic rocker trim $873, fender $450 Used, found them for $550 and $250. (wrong color) Found a whole running car (same year, color...damage on other side) for $700. OK ...it cost me $400 to get it delivered from LA. to OH. You just have to look around ...sometimes you get lucky. |

If you think TD parts are hard to find & over priced, try items that are specific to TFs. |

It is relative result of the mis-guided exhultation frequently expressed here over the ludicrous prices INVESTORS are willing to pay for cars, such that enthusiasts, esp. the newbies are effectively excluded from ownership and preservation. Just my opinion. |

A synonym for investor in the car business is speculator. The next to last liar wins...and the last one holds the bag. But that's life! We enjoy getting all greasy and dirty and bringing things back to life. That's what this most helpful forum is all about. |

Just my opinion. Unquote. Paul, In my opinion, anyone who buys an MG, restores it and expects to make money off of it as an investment, needs to be reevaluated on their mind set. In plain English, they need their head examined! By the time I'm done with the TF, I'll have over 40Gs in it and it'll still be a 30/35 G car, if I'm lucky. To me and I'm sure others, it's a hobby/challenge and that cost money. I just get POd when someone try's to screw me to the wall on pricing. I didn't mean to say all on ebay are bad. I bought my Smith heater from a guy on ebay and it's everything he said it was and at a fair price. It usually takes a while for the newbies to find out that it cost a lot of money to get involved. If they don't have it, then they retreat to a less costly hobby. Not being heartless, just being practical! PJ |

Well, I have recently sold the following -with some of the auctions starting @.01 Here are the items and their final prices: Set of bonnet handles-$21.00 MGA frame corner repair plates- $.01 Aftermarket fog light- $16.05 TD steering wheel center- $17.50 A couple auctions I have on now and their start prices: A pair of good used clutch release bearings- $5.95 A set/ pair of good used crank and camshaft gears - $19.95 So, it all depends on the seller, and I always believe the market sets the value/ price in the end. There is one E-bay seller ("xx auction services") who routinely has parts which are quite.highly priced - in my opinion. I have no idea if they are selling or not. Brian |

I restore old bikes and it's hitting me hard as well ebay is a double edged sword. Great source of parts, but has also driven those prices sky high. |
