MG TD TF 1500 - Problem with Air Filters - TD MKII

Hi Guys –

I am stumped by an issue a friend is having with his TD MKII. He is nearing the completion of his restoration and we are facing the common air filter dilemma that presents itself to those owners whose cars are missing the larger MK II factory oil-bath air filtration manifold and oil-bath assembly.

At the suggestion of Tom Lange, we attempted to fit the TF style pancake filter assemblies – but the front-most assembly still interferes with the fit of the right-side hood panel. The lower portion of the assembly is resting right up against the hood panel – such that it will chafe the inside of the panel. We are able to properly latch the hood down on that side, but the filter is right up against the panel. This TD MKII has the correct bulge on the right-side panel – though this bulge does not allow room for the TF style assembly – as the bulge sits up higher than the lower portion of the round filter assembly. The assembly sits at an angle and this causes the lower portion of the assembly to angle out in the direction of the hood’s side panel. The reproduction, TF-style filter assemblies came from Abingdon Spares.

The carbs were supplied by Joe Curto and both carry the casting number 4031. Tom, are these correct, genuine MK II carburetors? My fear is that the carb bodies may have too long a throat and may be placing the carbs too close to the side panel.

The engine is not canted over to the right by too tight an engine stabilizer. There are no spacer blocks fitted between the carburetors and the intake manifold. The intake is the standard TD intake – I don’t believe the MKII had a distinct intake manifold.

So – my question is, what could be causing the interference? What are other MKII owners using as replacement air filter assemblies?

I thought I would bring my friend my original TF filters and see if there is some minor difference between the reproduction assemblies and the original design.

As I say – I am stumped. Others seem to report no problems using the TF style filters on the TD MKII.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Jeff - yes, those are the correct TD/C carbs.

Yes, it is tight, and it is not unknown for ANY filter to rub inside the bonnet. But there are few options.

Mike Shea has had the larger TD/C air snorkel re-cast, and also has put together some convincing larger oil-bath housings. You may well find that the larger snorkel also rubs; they frequently show wear right there.

Jeff, I may have the solution to your air cleaner problem. Please send me an email and I will let you know what I have.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I misunderstood the various posts about the use of the TF filters - those certainly are not inexpensive - my friend was a bit disapointed when things didn't quite work out.

I am wondering if taking a bit off of the back of the carb flange would provide enough room for the filters.

Hugh, I will email you as I am interested in your thoughts/solution.

Thanks again for the assistance,

Jeff
