MG TD TF 1500 - Pump Diaphram

Hello, new fuel pump diaphrams come with plastic backing. Does anyone know if it is there for a reason or should it be removed? In the past I have removed it thinking the petrol would have turned it to mush.

I thought the plastic was on there to protect the diaphram from the fuel and its resultant deterioriation. I left the plastic in place.

I agree with Jim, leave it in place.

Ian - The diaphragm you got is probably 8 - 10 years old (or possibly an after market diaphragm). The diaphragms that Burlen Fuel Systems sell today have a single layer of reinforced elastomer instead of the two layer elastomer with the protective plastic layer on the fuel side of the diaphragm. Sometimes, if the pump is weak, the protective plastic layer can make the pump difficult to get adjusted correctly. I used to have problems with that and was happy to see BFS discontinue the use of it. Cheers - Dave

I retired a pump that the previous owner had installed. It was approx. 10 years old. I had taken it apart in order to clean out tank rust that had found its way through the screen into just about every nook and cranny. It had the diaphram with the clear plastic layer that you described. No matter what I did to adjust the tension on the diaphram, it would stop working when it heated up. At the time, I thought that fuel had gotten in between the layers and affected its flexibility. Since my pump was not origional, I couldn't justify getting it rebuilt when a brand new solid state SU was about the same cost.
