MG TD TF 1500 - Question from a new guy!
I've just got my TD on the road, I've covered 200 miles so far....I love it!!! However, I seem to be getting only 16 miles per gallon, this can't be right? My B gets about 25 MPG, I would assume the TD should get at least 20 MPG, if not 25....am I expecting too much? What MPG should I expect? |

How many flats down are the carb. adjusting nuts? How many times will the fuel pump click, w/ key on, eng. off. Or i should say interval between clicks, after initial click, click, click? Did you set the timing? Brakes free? I've been getting 30-35, corrected MPG. w/ a 4.30 gear. All should get 25 or better. Len |

That seems to be the correct MPG figures, as long as its stage 5, then you would like the performance!. As Len says how well has it been tuned, and did you restore it yourself, it might have a few problems like leaks in the tank, carbs etc. |

I tend to get in the low-mid 20's at best- using my odometer of unknown accuracy- and generally pedal to the floor. Check your odo- that could be your answer. |

If you are only getting 17 mpg even allowing for smaller US gallons thenm there is something wrong. Don't waste time fiddling- take the car to a man who knows SU carbs and has a rolling road. You will be amazed hwo the preformance (0 to 70 mph) amd gas consumption improves. 2 weeks ago we took one of our cars to such a man and he fpound us an extra 20 hp at the wheels. |

With the key on , eng. off the pump should only click every 60 or so seconds, if more than that, it may be worn float needles. Set the floats @ 7/16 inch. Remove the dash pots & pistons, set the jets to .070 inch, with a vernier caliper, below the bridge. See the archive [MGA] by Don Termblay, on carb. mixture setting. My TD odometer is slow by 22% as i have a 4.3 ring & pinion.Set the max ign. advance @ 34-36deg. approx 3,000-3,400 RPM. Len |

Thanks all! I will check the carbs, they do appear to be running rich, I never thought to check the calibration on the odometer, I was just pleased that it even worked!! I suspect that could be a big part of the problem, as the car runs much too well to be much off on the timing etc. Every day is a learning experience! |
