MG TD TF 1500 - Radiator Update....
Picked up the rad today and the chap said he had never seen a rad in such good shape... not a bad fin or tube and certainly "no leak". He put 15 pounds pressure on it and it was solid...????? I found that when i parked it the last couple times, i lost 2 litres plus a tiny bit... (this would be in the pan i put under the rad) when i came back a few days after. I assumed it would be a leak about midway down the rad??? Noticed some rust at the bottom of the thermostat housing now that the rad is off... if it leaked from that area, would it be 2 liters worth? Found that the upper and lower tanks on the rad had been chromed as well at some point... now, where is that Autosol.......? |

Gordon; There is a good chance that you need to replace the seal on your waterpump. At that time it would be a good time to replace the bearings with sealed units. Most likely yours are still the older style with open faced bearings. The last ime I found a replacement seal it was at Abingdon Spares.Moss does not have it.After installation it pays to run the seal dry to set it in to the pump impellor as it does not seal completely when first installed. It is a carbon ring set into a rubber bellows and needs mating. Sandy Sanders |

Sandy, You’re probably spot on regarding the water pump - it has all the hallmarks of a leaky seal, especially since Gord Lawson’s car was off the road for a long time. His TD is a ‘53 which makes it a TD2 and will likely have the late-type pump. I ordered Abingdon’s LAST seal before Christmas. As far as I can determine, Abingdon are the only one to sell the seal alone without the $114 rebuild kit, or a rebuilt pump at $125 plus an exchange core that Moss (US) seem to insist on. Abingdon are now out of stock on it (page 7, item 20 - OEM W127) and don't expect more stock 'till April. It does appear however, that B&G have them (AEB156) at £4. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. P.S Sandy - You’ll be interested to know that its -28°C and going down to -32°C by morning (25 "below zero” in the old system). It will probably be -40°C in your old Québec haunt (Chicoutimi). |

Gordon / Sandy There is a magazine in the UK called Practical Classics. I note in the current edition that you can buy a pair of overalls that have 12v elements in them which you connect to the car's battery. They will keep you warm whilst you drive with the top down at -30 or whilst you are doing an oil change in the garage. Don't know if you need to change the polarity in a T series though! see the product at www.hotwired-online.com I can still remember during the 1960s changing the clutch in my ancient Austin A30 with the car parked in the road outside my parents house, with the snow piled high on the pavement and only a feeble torch to provide illumination. Used to put on several pullovers, two pairs of trousers and stuff newspapers inside my boiler suit to keep warm. Amazing thing was after a quick wash I was out in the Austin for a night out with my palls. Often wonder what my current TD was doing that very night. Cheers Jan T |

Thanks Gordon... just ordered it....(once i did a search on B&G and figured out who they were). And Jan... so you are suggesting that i order an "electrified" pair of woolies from an English company that i plug into a power source??? One that was designed by some descendant of "Joseph Lucas".... hmmmmm.... think i will pass...!!!!!!!!! Sounds like there might be a "Darwin Award" there somewhere. |

Jan - Someone on one of the BBS gave a link to a web site that had electric blankets to use in a car. This was just before Christmas, so I ordered on for my wife for the colder nights in the TD, when we are going to the meetings of the local register during the winter months (although, winter in the Puget Sound reagon of Washington State is nowhere nearly as cold as Ontario, or even your area). My wife hasn't used it yet as I have used this winter to do sume much needed maintenance on the TD (in between working on fuel pumps). The blanket looks like it should do a pretty good job. Cheers - Dave |

Received my new seal the other day and this morning removed the old one.. They are "soooo" different. Anyone replaced the waterpump seal.... did it look "really" different? Almost like it goes in backwards to make contact with the little pin that goes through the shaft? The new one has a spring where the old one doesn't . |

Gord...I just rebuilt my spare pump this weekend and used sealed bearing (SKF 6301-2RSJ/EM)which is perfect for this application. You should be able to buy this bearing at any commercial bearing dealer. If you have problems, email me and I will give you another cross reference. RE: the seal....it you look in a TF service manual you will see both types of seal diagramed. Sounds like you do not have the shaft far enough out to get the impeller on. |

Gordon;; Does the carbon seal rest on and is driven by a pin. If so you have the old type pump. The newer pump has a seal consisting of a rubber bellows and carbon seal all in one unit. The carbon ring seals against the rear of the pump impeller. The bellows portion is pressed by the spring tension into the water pump cavity. and seals itself to the housing by6 pressure alone. It pays to rotate the impeller dry for a few minutes to seal it to the back side of the pump. This can be done on the bench by a hand drill or in the car prior to adding coolant. The new type seal is item # 6 as used in pump td-tf from #6483. Moss #434050 NLA. These are the ones that Abingdon Spares sell. Good luck. Sandy Sanders. |

Just got an email from Brown and Gammon... the seal they sell is for a repro pump they have handled for 35 years and is indeed very different form mine. I now have to find a dealer with old stock or a new replacement for the original. I got the pump apart this morning (impellor and pulley off) and may as well change the bearings while i'm in there. If anyone knows of a new old orginal seal, let me know???? |
