MG TD TF 1500 - Rear axle marking

There is a marking on the rear axle of my TD. 8 41 is the ratio but what is the meaning of 2 56 48 ? The car is a 53 TD.

Hmmm. I have no idea. I’ve never seen R&P #s stamped on housings either. Maybe a rebuilders/ dismantlers inventory number from long ago?

Maybe a serial number? TD23004 built in December 1952 has number 24491 on it.

Now you got me curious. Guess I’ll go look at my housings a little closer when I’m able. Never noticed any numbers before Always learning something new.

Interesting. Both cars are 53's. I crawled under my late 52 and cannot see any numbers from the back. Where exactly are these stamped?
Christopher Couper

On the rear side of the left axle tube.

LC Laurent31

It doesn't show in this picture, but on my car it's where the red box is on the front side of the left axle tube.

Joe, I think Your axle is from a Y type. It has the brakets for the rear shocks.

Later cars had those brackets on the housings. As mentioned they were for a different application

Correct. Front side of the left axle tube. Mistake.

Mine also has the unused brackets.

OK. I can't believe you guys made me go out and unzip my car, crawl underneath it with a phone to see what my car had inscribed on it. :-)

My numbers are stamped on the left hand front but more to the top. Plus since it's on the car the check strap blocks a lot of it but with multiple pictures I was able to discern this:

8 41 20654

My car is TD19629 and was built in Sept 1952. So the numbers are similar (mine is off by 1025) probably owing the the number of other cars that had the same rear end (Y's and ???) made during the same period.

Nice tidbit of knowledge.

My 1954 TF has 39 3568 on it. TF 4887. It has the same brackets as Joe's.

OK, it is clear now that it's a sorta serial number.
Mine was so akin to a date code but it would have meant a replacement part. Now I can be pretty sure it's original.

Thanks a lot.

Laurent.

The numbers 8 and 41 are the teeth of pinion and crown wheel. That is 1:5,125.

I think you've nailed it Klaus, on my number, 39 3568, just above the 39 is stamped 8. Hence 39 divided by 8 is 4.875, the standard TF diff ratio,

By the way,
I took the additional brakets to install a Panhard rod to the rear axel. Makes good driving in curves. If someone wants pics, I will send them.
