MG TD TF 1500 - Rear Brake Cylinders
I'm rebuilding my rear cylinders and recently received the rebuild kits. In addition to the spring, expander, cup seal and boot there was a round rubber washer. I don't recall one being in the cylinder when I took it apart nor can I find a document that shows where it goes. Does anyone know about this "extra" part? Thanks, JAP |

I think the washer goes in the recess at the outer end of the outer piston (slides over the piston proper), so it "seals" the cylinder when brakes at rest. |

John - The place I have always installed that particular washer is in the trash can. These kits come for many different cylinders, not just the ones on the TD and TF, and do not necessarily use all of the parts on all of the applications. Good luck - Dave |

In the brake cylinder is a rubber cup which effects the seal. i have never heard it called a washer. |

Bob - Over on this side of the pond, we often get rear brake cylinder kits that contain, in addition to the correct ruber cup, a flat rubber washer. I don't know of anyone who has figured out what to use the washers for so they either collect on the far corner of one's work bench or wind up in the trash. Cheers - Dave |

Dust seal as George has stated. |

Workshop Manual, section M, pg. M8, fig. M11. Seal is shown & labeled on the piston, bottom right. Len |

Len - In my shop manual fig M11 bottom right is labled piston and dust cover not seal. The washers included in the kits that I have received would never fit in the area George talks about - ID too small and OD too large. Regards - Dave |

David- I have a couple kits at home with said washer- they lightly slide over the piston proper, and are a perfect fit in the "dust cover" recess. They therefor seal the outer piston when the brakes are at rest. I guess some kits have different pieces for different vintages or applications. |

George - It sure looks like that is the case (different pieces in different kits). I have never gotten a washer that would begin to fit over the piston, but then it has been almost 20 years since I had to rebuild the wheel cylinders (love that silicon fluid). Cheers - Dave |
