MG TD TF 1500 - Rear brakes leaking fluid

I have a 53 TD and I noticed that the inside of the rear passenger side (right) back wheel has brake fluid on the rim and tire.

I think I need to replace or repair the rear brake cylinder.

Is this difficult?

How do I get inside the brake drum (steel wheels)? Do I need a special wheel pulling device?

Will the Moss brake repair kit work or does the entire cylinder usually need to be replaced? It looks like the rubber boot over the hand brake is cracked open so I would replace this as well.

Also, I have recently noticed a "catching" when I pull on the hand brake - as if something is catching in the system, then suddenly releases and it works fine. Any idea what is catching?

Many thanks,

Bill, Sometimes pulling the drum off can be a tussle, but the cylinders can be rebuilt, it seems to be the consensus that it's easier to just replace them with new. You would have to look at yours for condition and see if it's feasible to rebuild them. The click in the hand brake could be the cables need lubing, only a guess. You'll probably figure that out when working on the brake cylinder. PJ

Don't forget to use the brake shoe adjuster to set the shoes at the minimum adjustment position before attempting to remove the drum.

While you are working the brake drum removal process checkout the other three drums as they may be full of brake dust from the shoes and check the condition of the shoes. I take my drums off every few thousand miles or to check nothing has seized and clean out the brake dust. One of the benefits of being semi retired with time to play with the toy!

Leaks at the line connection and line can show up on the inside of the rim and tire. If the is the case no need to pull the drill to repair the leak. Regards, tom

Bill, if you are not familiar with work on brake hydraulics, have someone experienced be near or watching. For bleeding the brakes after changing the cylinder or fixing a leaking connection, you need a 2nd person anyway.
