MG TD TF 1500 - rear spring replacement

Any recommendatons on parts to buy besides the basic spring sets? (bushings, nuts, bolts and such.) I haven't dismantled the old springs yet, and may not do so before the current sale prices end.

Bobby,
As long as you are going to replace the springs, replace all of the bushings with the non rubber type, and it is always suggested to also replace the "U" bolts when replacing the springs,,

bobby, do you have a moss catalog? not sure if you have a TF or TD,and i'm not sure if there is a difference. if assembled as at the factory, the TD bolts at the front of the spring are a bear to remove. as the car sits they are inserted backward from what they need to be to easily disassemble. i ended up cutting mine off with a cut off wheel. i was planning on replacing them anyway. after they were driven out i found, as expected, they were very corroded. buy the bolts, nuts, etc and all rubber parts.
i believe that should be all you need, but smarter posters will chime in. regards, tom

If you buy new "rubber" parts, they probably won't last very long,, that's why the non rubber replacements are recomended,,,

If you want the job to go smoothly then buy all new parts and have them on hand. Once you disassemble everything you can decide what needs replacement and return the rest. If you have lots of patience (not me) you can disassemble first then make a list.

While you are having fun in the rear check out the bushings in the shocks. If you don't already have the buffer plates (267-560)for the rear axle now's the time.

Am I the only one who thinks the Td sits a little high? My 53 does.
I feel that the gap between the wheels and the fender should be constant as you go around the top half of the wheel. In other words the 2 circles should be concentric. The TF is lower than the TD and I think it looks better.
I know this thing about ride height is like the debate about what color socks you should wear. In the 50's we were all lowering the rear end of our cars, but then those California guys started lowering the FRONT!
I think I would get the tf springs if I were buying new springs. A good spring shop can re-arch your springs to give you the lift you want, but I don't know where to find a spring shop these days.
How about lowering blocks between the spring perch and the axel?

Thanks for the responses; Tom, your comment on difficulty with the front spring bolt reminded me of a thread a few months ago that I cannot find. It started as a question about rear shocks, but drew some comments about the advantage of new springs for a smooth ride. I would surely like to locate that thread.

Bobby,
I understand what Tom said about that front bolt since I just replaced my springs. However there is a hole in the frame extension to use as a finger hole and with the right socket and wrench I had very little difficulty removing the old and then replacing it.

Problems with the front bolt are when a DPO has had the body tub off, and has re-assembled the spring with the bolt going from the outside in. With the tub in place the bolt cannot thus be removed. The nut should be on the outside, so that the bolt can be slid out towards the driveshaft.

tom lange's post is exactly what i am talking about. the hole mort is referring to will only get the nut off if the bolt is installed from the outside in....is that factory original or DPO? regards, tom

You can specify and direct fit TF rear springs on a TD and it will lower the ride height to the benefit of ride and appearance.

Tom Peterson - I've got a couple of un-molested TD's in the shop right now, and they have the bolts going the right way. I suspect that a TD with the bolts going the wrong way was either apart before, or made on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon - or after a liquid lunch!
