MG TD TF 1500 - Rebuilt brakes - 500 mile check
After taking the car out yesterday for it's last drive of the year (a bit chilly) I have put it onto axle stands and pulled all four brake drums to check their condition. I rebuilt the brake system about a year ago with new lines and master cylinder, but retaining the wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinder bores were slightly pitted and scratched, so I honed them and finished off with 600 grit paper. I was unable to remove every blemish from the bores, thus the check after 500 miles. The system is filled with DOT 5 brake fluid. I found that one of the rear cylinders is showing signs of slight seepage. Not enough to have reached the friction surfaces, but I am going to replace it. All the other cylinders are bone dry. Second time round it only took me about an hour to get the car up on stands and remove all the drums, so I will probably carry out this check every year. This winter's tasks are to refurbish the rear springs, fit seat belts and rebuild the carburettors. I have already noticed that the front bolts on the rear spring have been fitted the wrong way round (so that they cannot be removed without cutting). |
