MG TD TF 1500 - rebuilt carbs

I recently saw an Ebay item listing rebuilt carbs for a TD. I contacted the outfit to see what they charged for a set of carbs, and their reply placed the cost at $550 US if I shipped my set to them as a core replacement. This compares with a new set at $929 US from Moss. As I see it, I have several choices: The rebuilt carbs from lacclairspares (risky?); a new set; rebuild mine myself (risky?); or find another source for rebuilt units recommended by you gentlemen and ladies.

I have no experience in rebuilding carbs. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Dick, I've had excellent results at very reasonable prices from Jim Taylor, 1222 Harned Dr., Bartlesville OK, 74006, (918) 333-3444. BB members speak highly of Joe Curto (718) 762-SUSU and John Twist of University Motors, (616) 682-0800. They all advertise in TSO.

Is there a site showing the steps in rebuilding S.U.'s? Other then (?) replacing gaskets and needles, is there any machining or anything?

Just did a quick search and this seems to include a ton of info:

Gordon,
I sent mine to John Twist. They did an awsume job, bolted them on and fired right up. They also polished them so they look great. John also has a "hands on" rebuild workshop where you bring your carbs and re-build over a weekend. I would have loved to do that....but didn't have the time in my schedule.

Where are you in Georgia? Don Harmer, frequent contributor to the board is in the Atlanta area and knows a good place there.

Had my TF 1 1/2inch SUs done by John Twist. Fantastic job, looked great and started right out of the box. Two week turn around via UPS door-to - door.

Dick,

Drop a line to Van Hook Vintage Sports Car Services LLC at vanhookvintage@epix.net. Outstanding service and reasonable rates. Look for the ad in the current "British Marque", the August TSO, and the September Hemmings Motor News (delivered on August 1).

George,

I live 38 miles south of the Atlanta airport using airport transfers tonbridge, just off of Interstate 85. I've never contacted Don, but I am willing to explore any and all options.

And my thanks to the rest of you for your help. I looked at John Twist's web site and was impressed that he guarrantees his work at an estimated $470 US. I will certainly call the others you have suggested.

RF,

Atlanta Imported Auto Parts in Decatur will rebush your carbs, install new shafts, etc. if yours need that much "rebuilding". They also have the good SU kits to install or have you do it.
By the way, you ought to join the Southeastern MG T Register, we are having a Swap Meet at AIAP this saturday at 12 noon.
AIAP is at 257 DeKalb Industrial Way, Decatur, GA 30030
404-299-5775
Their web site is www.atlantaimported.com.

You need to know about them as they are your "local" MG Parts store and have much in stock or from Moss in 2 days if not in stock (and you don't pay shipping)

Dick, I bought the carb rebuild video (and carb rebuild kits) from Moss and rebuilt my own carbs. The video is outstanding. It is very easy to follow and quite informative. I am by no means a master mechanic and I fould this not only to be a big cost savings, but extremely easy to do and quite gratifying that I did it myself. The only aspect of the job I outsourced was to have the carb bodies rebushed and install new shafts and butterflies by Apple Hydraulics. I sent them the new shafts and butterflies that came with the Moss kits and they gave me a credit since I supplied the parts that they would normally provide. Doing the work yourself will make you so much more knowledgeable about the carbs and more confident working on them in the future. All of the folks listed in the previous posts I know would certainly do excellent work, but again, doing it yourself is very rewarding. I must say that without the video, I would not have tackled it otherwise.
