Jon, You can use a starter from an MG midget. It looks the same, and is available from your local car parts store, and is a lot less expensive than a TD or TF starter. The only thing that must be modified, is one of the two bolts that hold the starter together,,, they are countersunk round head bolts, and one of the heads must be filed down a bit so the starter fits flush when mounted. I’ve been using a Midget starter in our TD for many miles with out any problems. Steve |

There's actually very little to rebuilding a starter, and any older shop that rebuilds starters, generators and alternators can do it easily. A couple of bronze bushings, new brushes and a quick skim of the segments of the armature (if even necessary), and the thing is done. I usually prefer to rebuild original, where numbers will match - in the case of a starter, the month and year of manufacture. A Midget starter is an easy alternative if you are in a bind, but rebuild the original as well. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
