MG TD TF 1500 - Red and Green
Ok, for you electrical folks. Why are the red and green sockets for the generator and fuel light wrapped in fine wire? |

It is a resistor to prevent the lens from melting I think. The TF bulbs are in an aluminium holder with no resistor which probably acts as a heat sink Ray TF 2884 |

I think the bulbs are also rated differently between TD and TF. Dave H |

That is interesting. Thanks Bud. Seems like a lot of work just to reduce the heat of the bulb to keep it from melting the lens. Neither of these lights should be on for any length of time. I guess the fuel light could be on for a bit. They used a standard dash bulb for the high beal indicator, but that is probably far enough back from the lens to keep the heat off. |

You can also use the appropriate led bulbs in the indicator sockets to keep the heat down. The sockets and switches (other than ignition switch assembly) are also found on the Sherman tank. Maybe these sockets were left overs from WWll, and the 24V systems. I am sure MG did not spend time re-inventing just to re-invent after WWll, I am sure they sourced available surplus at pennies on the pound. JMHO... CR |
