MG TD TF 1500 - Remote Control Horn
This is just a quick follow-up since so many of you kindly offered your thoughts and advice on how to get my remote-control-activated horn to work. That thread is now in the archives as “Suppression Spark Plug Leads” dated July 13th 2013. Before changing anything with the system I wanted to make one more stab at following a hunch. The fault with the horn seemed to be fully correlated with how warm the car was getting when running. The only electrical device that was heating up along with the car was the ignition coil. My thought was that as coil got hotter it was creating interference between the keychain remote sender and the receiver mounted in the driver's seat. I had tried several inexpensive liquid filled coils, which after running a while, were too hot to touch. I got a more expensive solid coil from Jeff Schlemmer at Advance Distributor. It is a Bosch made in Brazil. It runs cooler, such that you can rest your hand on it after driving for a while. It appears that changing the coil fixed the problem. Now we get a horn response no matter how warm the car happens to be. When the deer or idiot driver jumps in front of me, I can feel confident slamming the horn button in the center of the steering wheel. Thanks again to those who offered advice. Safety? Fast?
