MG TD TF 1500 - Removal of Master Cylinder
The shop manual says the master cylinder should be removed from the top after taking out the floor board. Is it possible to remove it from underneath or is it too difficult? I would rather not take out the floor board because I assume you have to remove the seat too. Also, after disconnecting the pipe line to the master cylinder, removing the bolts holding it to the frame and disconnecting the brake pedal return spring from the frame, the manual says 'Lift out the brake pedal complete with push-rod, rubber boot and pedal return spring'. I don't understand this. The brake pedal is attached to the pedal shaft. Can the master cylinder not just be pulled backward off the push rod? Thanks for any input you can give me. |

Ron - Yes the brake master cylinder can be removed from under the carand the push rod/brake pedal left in place just as you suggest. disconnect the brake line from the rear of the master cylinder and gently move it out of the way, remove the two bolts and pull the cylinder straight back. I did just that a couple of years ago when the cylinder on our TD started leaking. Good luck - Dave |

Just disconnect the lines and the two bolts holding the Master Cylinder to the frame. Pull back the unit and catch the dripping fluid. Thats all there is to it. 10 Minutes at the most. |

Darn... and i knew this one.... Mine came off with a slight twist and left the rod and rubber... just pulled out the rubber after. I too didn't want to remove the floorboard... although the seats are easy. |
