MG TD TF 1500 - Removing steering wheel shaft from column

Hi, I'm trying to remove the splined hollow shaft that holds the steering wheel to the steering shaft. How do I go about removing it? I cant see any bolts that lock it into place, is this just a press fit that has to be removed by hammering it out? This is for my 51 TD... thanks in advance for help, description or pictures.

There is an oval shaped key under the clamp. You will see a slot milled in to the splined shaft. The key is in this slot. Slide the clamp off and you will find the key. Dont loose it, they are expensive and replacements don't fit well.

To follow up on David's correct advice, turn the shaft so the key is upside down, slide it in and out and/or tap on it, and the key will likely fall out. George

I have spent some time and while I can see the keyslot, I don't see a key. The entire shaft moves easily in and out, but only up to a point.

OK, I got it out and found the key :) It was pretty greasy and virtually invisible, they really did make them a very fine fit!

So the new wheel is temporarily on. I may want to replace some of the fairly rusted bits on the shaft (the spring cover and the locking bracket) before going further... Off to the Moss catalog!

Follow up instructions: Remove wheel, apply WD-40 to shaft. Loosen clamp bracket, slide spring assy forward and slide clamp forward until you can see keyway and underside of outer shaft. Locate keyway on shaft. Turn outer wheel shaft until keyway is pointing down. Key should be visible in outer shaft; if not, slide a .010 feeler gauge into keyway and work back until you see key move. Keep working gauge until key is loose, then remove key. Shaft can now be removed.

Tip: Use a shop magnet to put that key back in because once it gets dropped it leaves planet earth forever! (Don't ask me how I know!!)

If anyone is interested, I'll sell the shaft I removed (for an MGA, I have been told) for the same amount it cost me to get the correct TD one... $65 plus shipping.
