MG TD TF 1500 - Replacement Headlamps
I have a 1954 TF. The headlights are all original. They look nice in the daytime but don't throw enough light at night so I am limited to daytime driving. I have no desire to clip a deer that are so numerous where I live. Does anyone have a suggestion to convert to new sealed beams. I'll be able to convert the wiring harness to switch between either but need info on which modern headlights may fit properly. |

Any modern 7" sealed beam will fit perfectly in the rim using the orig. clips. A halogen type is much brighter- GE makes a nice one. There are also non-sealed beam halogens brighter yet, but have no experience with them. |

John, I think it's a pretty simple conversion to Halogens. Try www.mgcars.org.uk/MG_Elec-Tech/Halogen_headlamps.html Hope this helps. Dan H. |

I find it interesting that your original headlamps are not bright. I run original ones and am always getting flashed by oncoming cars. They also really drain on the system and when on high beam you have to be running about 3k on the tac to keep from discharging. Maybe the bulbs need replacing or you need to resilver the lamps? Many thanks everyone for the input. I purchased the new sealed beam, plugged them in and have been driving in the cool of evening for the past 2 nights. However (Chris take note) the real problem was that my TF, which was acquired early this year, had the passenger side hi/lo beam wires reversed at the harness. Didn't discover that until I tried to focus the new lamps. I'll go back to the Lucas lights to give them a fair comparison. I guess that the moral of the story is... assume nothing! |
