MG TD TF 1500 - Replacement MGTD engine
I've purchased a 53 TD (TD220661) which has had a 56 Volvo engine and transmission installed. I'd like to locate an XPAG engine and transmission to return it to Classic status. Could you help me find engine/transmission? Obviously, I'll also need quite a few accessories too. I've been wondering about looking for a poorer condition "project car" which might just be purchased for parts? |

Hi I have a Wolseley 4/44 that I am considering breaking - it has an excellent 1250 engine - I Dont think the transmission is the same - mine is a columb change - email me if anybody interested. This is the XPAW engine - the wolseley varient of the XPAG MG version. Cheers Gobby |

Stan, Just a few thoughts: If it is possible to return the car to XPAG spec, I would do it. On the other hand if it is a running well with the Volvo drive train then enjoy it. It is going to take a while to find and rebuild all the bits you need to return it to standard anyway. There is alot of XPAG stuff out there. It comes at a price, but it is available. I would roughly estimate $2500 US by the time you get an engine with a rebuildable crank and block plus gearbox plus all the bolt on bits (also steady bracket and rod, prop shaft etc. etc.) Scott Barrow wants more but if the engine has been rebuilt to high standard it is worth more. Rod also suggests he can put a complete package together. It is nice to get all the bits at he same time. I used an XPAW engine but I already had a damaged XPAG engine so all the brackets were there. As Gobby says the gearbox is no use (not even the internals as far as I can tell) and the sump, front monting plate, inlet and exhaust manifolds are different. His car is closer to home for you however. I would like to think that any TD or TF you find with an engine and gearbox should itself be a candidate for restoration not just parts. Having said that, alot of cars in better shape than mine have been broken up for spares recently. Maybe I am too optimistic/sentimental but if they have lasted the last 50 years why break them now? Lastly, I have no connection with Scott, Rod or Gobby other than this site and MG ownership. Tony |

Hi, I have a TD -53 with "wrong" engine number XPAG 4030. Nice running and in really good shape, but... I would give it away if someone could help me to locate the original TD2 26492 engine. Thomas |

Chaps, On the subject of missing engines, anyone know anything about XPAG/TF/30805? This engine was put into my TF in November 1953, and has since gone missing. I suspect it was a bad 'un from the beginning 'cos the number was too low for the number sequence at that build date - this suggests it was pulled from another TF 'cos it was faulty, subsequently repaired and shoved in mine. It would be good to be re-united with it..... AB |

Adrian, A "shot in the dark" ...but perhaps a good place to start! Have you tried Jeff Paynes "TF list" ? Although not everyone has included their engine numbers...you might get lucky! I belive you can contact him from link on the TF site: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtf/ for most current list. Cheers, David 55 TF1500 # 7427 (engine XPEG1212) Only 9599 more to check! ;-O !!! |

I would like to find xpag 12720. It was replaced by PO in early 60's, probably in the Boston area, due to being overbored and needing a rebuild. Back then short blocks were available from Sears. The motor belongs in TDC12828. Thanks, Marv Stuart |

OK. If I can get any spare time I will start a TD and TF page on the MGTD and MGTF sites for those that have and want certain serial numbers. Who knows, someone may get lucky. The problem is that somebody would have to pay dearly for the engine thats in my car now and that would probably be a show stopper even if they showed up with my block #19988. I am sure those of you with running cars would feel the same. Chris |

Abingdon Spares has a 1500 XPEG short block on their web site. |

Stan, I have more bad news for you. If you look underneath your car, I think you will find one of the cross members has been cut out. I bought a TD without an engine (I know, "what were you thinking?!!!") and a PO had evidently had an incorrect engine in it and cut out one of the cross members in the area where the transmission goes. |
