MG TD TF 1500 - replacement radiator shroud bolts

I'm currently restoring the grill slats to conform to the original interior color (red). I've removed the chromed radiator shroud, and then I soaked the moderately rusted bolts and nuts attaching the grill slats to the interior of the shroud with the trusty WD-40. Success in breaking 9 of the 10 nuts loose, but instead of breaking loose the 10th, it just plain broke. I'm very hesitant at welding a new bolt to the inside of the chromed shroud in fear of destroying or discoloring the chrome on the outside. Aren't these 2BA sized bolts welded to a flat piece of brass that was then brazed to the inside of the shroud PRIOR to chroming ? Any hints or suggestions for repair ????

Hello. I think the orig. "bolts" were screws passed through a wing-shaped base, and then soldered to the shell. As it is brass and so thin, I don't think it could be brazed. Some years ago I successfully replaced a couple of mine, really heating the new screw, and kind of burying it in the old orig. blob of solder, and lastly warming the blob a bit to really fuse with as little heat as possible. No problem with discoloration, but the chrome was not so nice either. If it broke at the nut, your chrome is really nice, etc. a small blob of epoxy (JB Weld) would work without risking the shell Good luck.

You can easily solder on the slat bolts by using a brass 10-32 flathead machine screw/bolt and a large old electric soldering iron. Tin the grill area with a pool of solder where the screw is needed., Set the brass screw in the molten solder pool. The electric iron will not damage the chrome.
