MG TD TF 1500 - Reupholstering TF Seats

G/day

Wondering if anyone has photographed the processes involved in doing this task. I have sourced the LaVerne Downey article and he kindly forwarded the photographs that were not accessible via the web site.

Appreciate if anyone has additional advice as stripping the drivers seat has uncovered some interesting chores that require addressing. Swab had new covers fitted over the original beige items, and appears the seats have had considerable time exposed to the elements.

So far the dismantling has revealed 5 and 2 cent coins, no gold sovereigns were in the collection.

New ply bases and complete refurbishment of one frame already completed. Upholstery kit and staple gun purchased, spray adhesive, foam and wadding components next on the list.

I found that the diagonal braces between the back and the seat piece were both split. that allowed the back to assume a steeper angle back. Don't know if there was any intentional effort to produce this laid back position or not.

But I welded them back to original configuration and have been happy since.

There is a bit of a knack to getting the rear panels tacked down, using the blued tacks and working your way around rhe edge with a mallett. You need to be driving in about 6-10 tacks simultaneously as you go (if you use the original method).

We did (really my wife mostly)our seats over the winter. I too found that one of the seats needed a crack repairing (braised it as I didn't have my welder in AZ). A couple things that I found: first my wife insisted that we use high density foam on the seat bottom 3" thick and a little less density foam 2" thick on the back. We got the foam custom cut at an auto upholstery shop. And per Lavernes method, used an electric carving knife for actual forming. In addition she also used a cotton batting similar to Laverne's instructions for stuffing EVERYWHERE around the edges to fill them out.
On the back there was no way, with the kit that I had, that I could hide tacks per the original so I used small SS screws with dished upholstery washers.
The results are really good!
I was going to paint the SS screws and washers a beige in an attempt to hide them but have elected to leave them alone.
It was a worthwhile DIY project that we both enjoyed doing:)

Many thanks to all those who replied with their assistance and advice.

Still battling with completing the passenger seat, however learning heaps along the way. The upholstery kit I purchased out of the US has some variations on the Moss kit that has required the use of modern techniques to fix the seat back.

Will post some images when I am content with the outcome.

All the best

E'er I forget -- we also have a set of 'here's how I did my seats by LaVerne'.

Hello, I can't seem to find a good description of the material on the MG TF seat back in the archives. It seems like 1/8 thick pressboard of some kind.

What is it and where can I buy it in North America (Canada)?

Here are links to MG T-series seat upholstery that I found when I was researching to do my TF seats. (I still haven't started.) Some have already been given in previous posts.

Count the number of flutes. The back and seat on original seats differ by one. My upholsterer made a superb job of reconditioning my seats, they bring tears to your eyes, but lined up the flutes exactly. Unfortunately they are not original but I am not bothered.

Jan, That's the same thing I did, lined them up exactly, they look nice and I'm certainly not going to change them. I don't think anyones noticed, but if they do, so be it. PJ
