MG TD TF 1500 - RF Suppression

FYI

With respect to RF suppression.

I had an interesting conversation with someone at Moss tech support that I trust.
They do have parts available that will do the trick.

171-659 Wire Set “Cobalt” $35.95
It comes with boots on the ends and push on connectors and requires a change in Distributor Caps to:
151-870 Distributor Cap $7.95
A new rotor would be a good idea.
151-850 Rotor $2.75

The distributor cap fits the standard distributor with no adjustments required.

These parts are also recommended if you want to use the pertronix Ignition.

Although not necessary, if you need a new coil the Petronix coil would be recommended:
143-256,266,270 Pertronix Ignition Coil $40.95-45.95

Attempts at RF suppression for plugs, coil or other parts will not be significant.

Mort, when I was a kid I had a MGB. I remember fitting some sort of a flimsy devices between the plug wires and the plugs to keep the "ticking noise" from my car's radio. All I remember is that it worked!
Is that what you are trying to do? Just curious.

Ed,
I was on the chassis dyno today. We were able to track the AFR and with a minor adjustment to the carb all seems well. We could not record a lot of the other data because of the interference. This is why I was looking into it.

Also I might want to put my Pertronix back in sometime and the suppression is recommended.

The information above about the distributor cap 151-870 fitting our standard distributors is incorrect. I just got a call from Moss Motors and they advised me that it will not fit and will get back to me with more information.
I will post what I hear.

If there is anyone I wouldn't trust commenting on RF suppression, it's the crowd at Moss. You don't need a new distributor cap, rotor, and all that to reduce electrical noise. And all of the standard ones will work fine with a Pertronix.

If the noise is a buzz or tapping, add resistor plugs or wires (not both), and add large capacitors from the side of the coil going to the voltage source (not the points!) to ground. If the problem is a whining sound in the radio, add capacitors from the D and F terminals of the regulator to ground. These should be large value capacitors; 100 microfarads isn't too much. (I needed 1000 mF to eliminate noise from the electric fuel pump in my Porsche.) Be sure to observe polarity and make sure the breakdown voltage is at least 25V. Not a bad idea to add a similar capacitor at the power connection of the radio.

Finally, run a heavy ground strap, like braided wire, from the radio to a close point on the frame. Try connecting this various places; sometimes that will make a difference.

S Maas,
Perhaps I wasn't clear. No one suggested at Moss that I need a new distributor cap or rotor for RF suppression. All they suggested was the "Cobalt" (171-659) wires. The problem was the wires come with different connectors that will not fit my cap. Hence the search for a cap that will fit. The rotor was suggested as an upgrade but the number for the better one is 151-805.

There is no radio involved. As I mentioned above in my reply to Ed it was interference with the equipment at the chassis dyno.

You are obviously electrically savvy and I appreciate the info in general. Any advice for my simple case?

BTW...I find it important to know the individuals at Moss tech support. You have to know who you are talking to. Some are better than others. I have gotten good and bad info in the past. Now I only get good info.
