MG TD TF 1500 - Right Side Radiator Stay

Over the years and over the miles the car was transported in boxes I seen to have lost the right hanc radiator stay.
I ordered a replacement from Abingdon but they shipped me a TC stay which I will return. They have no TD stays in stock. Asking about the TD stay they state the left and right are the same.

I decided to fabricate one myself.

I ordered up some 1/32 wall tubing so I can make one. I have a stay on the left hand so dimensions are not required.

However I decided to look at my inventory of eBay pictures. I find one TD (with later individual air cleaners) that has a straight stay. One with a single air cleaner sitting on the cast aluminum air duct, like mine, with a bent stay and a third with no stay.

Now can mine use a straight stay or will it hit some thing and If so what kind of a bend should I have?

My TD dates from December.January of 51/52.

Thanks

There is a slight bend directly under the front lower corner of the aluminum air cleaner manifold. This lets the stay fit under the manifold with some clearance. Car is at home or I would measure for you. George

Jim,
Another option is to attach the radiator stay to the bulkhead as shown on my TD. You will then avoid any interference with the carbs and avoid an awkward bend in the rod. Image 2 shows the bracket you would need to fabricate.

Dave;
I have already ordered a piece of tube so I will try fabricating one but I will need some idea of the bend.

The fab is not difficult for a straight piece.

Phil;

I only see one image.

Thanks to all.

Jim, there is a used set on eBay at present,with the clevis ends --

I did verify that the left hand stay interferes with the air filter/intake manifold.
I can see how the one on ebay is bendt and I will measure it.
I also tried the TC one and it clears fine. Although the bend is totally different.

I took a short cut.
Welded two stays together to make a long one.

Jim, the body shop straightened mine out when they did all the body work, of course the engine wasn't in the car. I guess thats something else I will have to do...

Now days when these things come up I just laugh about it and fix it.

I moved my radiator mount lower to accommodate a set of aftermarket air cleaners until I was able to find an original. There are holes that work well for the top mount on the radiator to move lower.

Done.

My tubing came from McMasters today. I love their (almost) instant delivery.

Here is the replacement stay. I still need to paint but its raining just now.

JIm, that is exactly how it should look. Jusst a slight bend to take into account the manifold sticking out.

The eBay post from Dallas was a life saver. I copied it and imported into Autosketch. I scaled it to the same length as the left side and measured both the position of the kick and the offset.

I did borrow a 1/2" tubing bender from a friend.

Thanks to all for the help.

Maybe you should go into the parts reproduction business. Looks great.
