MG TD TF 1500 - Running Board Rear Wing Alignment

On page 78 in 'Original MG T Series' there is à picture of a TF showing a side view. The edge of the rear wing is out of line with the bottom of the running board and in fact the edge of the latter appears to be deeper at the rear. I know I am being hyper critical but I am trial fitting the TF's body and could make the join perfectly level. Can someone advise please.

Jan,

All the lower edges ideally should line up.However, past accidents, previous owners work can change the panel accuracies.
One important test of panel fits in TF rebuilds is that of the side engine panel alignment. The visible,(as viewed externally from the side of the car), top edge of the side engine panel needs to line up with the bottom edge of the scuttle top.ALSO,and this is the important part, the bottom edge of the front quarter panel needs to line up with the bottom fold line of the side engine panel.

Ensure the chromed plated 'tread' strips line up parallel with each other.I have seen so called Concours cars often with these strips going in three different angles! Of course they should be parallel with each other.

Jan: All of the 'accepted' books on the T Series have pictures of terribly restored cars. Unless you are looking at factory photo's or perhaps survivors, don't pay attention to those pictures.

Look at the gallery photos on the link below supplied by Rob, Frank, Colin and others for better views of what is original to the TF's.

Do the bodywork how it should look- perfect! You want people to come up to you at shows and compliment it. Sight down the wing/running board lines and make sure flowing and smooth. Obviously the running board to wing should be in good alignment with no steps. Stand back and look from all angles. Takes lots of hours to fix, but will be worth it in the end. Keep in mind the books are just guides, and they used whatever cars were available to photograph. Some restorers just were not so good or picky either! George
