MG TD TF 1500 - Rust removal trick

This was posted on the MGB technical link. It worked so well, I felt the TD owners might want to try it

http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/rust/electrolytic_derusting.htm

I have a 50 gallon tank of sodium hydroxide solution that I use for parts stripping. I used a 4 amp/6 volt battery charger. Hooked up pos to steel drum, neg to copper wire with part on it. Used a plastic pipe to hang the part in the solution.

This cleans off rust like you would not believe. I have been doing bolts, nuts, washers and misc small parts from my BGT I am restoring and it beats the heck out of standing in front of my wire wheel cleaning small parts all day.

Bruce, do you plan to try and plate items as well?

Bruce-
I've used this method for small parts and it works great. It's relatively cheap (cost of power for battery charger) and the solution can be used over again. The size of the container restricts the size of the parts you can clean but you can do part of one piece and then the other sections in some logical sequence.

Is an electrode just a plain piece of metal or is it special? I have scrap stainless/Iron at my waterjet shop & was wondering if these would work. If not where can you get one & how much do they cost?

V.W. Any piece of plain, uncoated steel should work.

I use a 50 gallon drum so part size is not a big issue. From what the article says, this should work on a smaller scale with a plastic pail and a piece of uncoated steel.

Dennis. I think I am going to purchase the zinc plating kit from Caswell.(http://www/caswellplating.com)

Probably can get by with purchasing the manual and the chemicals, but as I am new to the plating side, figure it is easier to start with the whole kit. This looks like a fairly straight forward process with minimal hazardous materials, wastes etc. From what I have read from other car sites and MG'rs this appears to work well.

If I have a plater in my area, I probably would not go to the tropble, but with shipping costs as they are, figure I will give it a try.
