I finally got some pictures of what I consider very poor quality seat "leather" from MOSS,, after only a few years, the "leather' (or what ever they use) is wearing away and the backing material is showing through,, I imagine in a short period on time, the backing material will tear....

I saw the sale that Moss has currently on interior and asked for a leather sample. Just to compare I also called Abington Spares and they sent me a vexine and leather patch that they advertise made in England and is more expensive than the Moss kit. Comparing the two, I was more impressed with the leather from A.S. The grain looks closer to my seats and the just seems to me better quality leather. I have heard good things about Heritage and Wm. M. Collingburn & Son in England in the archives. What a shame you spent all that time and money and you wanted it done "right" the first time. Frank |

Steve, How old is the leather, and how many miles did you put on it? Moss has always been very responsive to problems, maybe contact them about it. George |

Hi . . . I wrote an article on recovering TF seats with the Moss kit. http://www.ttalk.info/mgtfSeatRecovering.html or I can send a PDF of the original article if you send your e-mail address to me. Quality of leather depends on a number of things. The type of tanning is one . . . do not use glove or clothing leather it will not stand up. Second is the area of the hide that the seat is cut from - the back is best, the belly is weakest. The seat pattern must be planned on the hide if you are to have long wearing seats. This sometimes may not happen in large volume shops. I found the Moss kit to be of good quality with only a few adjustments. Their standard red was a bit too maroon in colour for my liking but the price was right. Heritage carpets are number one quality (some fitting required) with the proper cornrow look. John and others, I can attest to the Heritage products. They are in an absolute class by themselves. We have a TD and a TC here in Rockburn, and they are both a thing to behold, but dreadfully expensive. Dave Runnings who used to be on this site quite frequently, made his own from hides of automotive quality for his TD. Considering the minimal amount he spent, they are excellent. Not was classy as Heritage, mind you, but for a difference of over $5,000, he has lovely seats. John, the next time you're in the Rockburn area, I can arrange for you to see both these interiors. I went with a local upholstery place that was recommended by others in the San Diego MG community (Ocean Beach Boat and Auto Upholstery). They did a really good job, including some fabrication and re-building. It came in at about $1800, which I thought was a little high, but probably fair. What I learned from them is that 1) the best leather is Euro Auto Luxe (available from Global in L.A.): http://www.globalupholstery.com/euroautoluxleather.html and 2) the original foam is really high quality and worth keeping if possible. The Auto Luxe leather is supposed to be equivalent to Connoly, and has the same color schemes. Global also sells Wilton Wool carpet. I had a heck of a time finding the carpet I wanted. Their sample was the best by far. I think going with a local shop is a good idea if they are up for the job. Jim |
