MG TD TF 1500 - Selling TD

We all seem to come to this point in our lives. I've had my cars for over 40 years and have financially held on to them all these years with the thought they would help me in retirement. Now I'm here and don't want to part with any of them. A few years ago my father gave me his beloved Karman Ghia to sell before he passed away at 90. Now I know how hard it is.
It's a early 50 TD, #1720, and a ground up restoration that took me 40 years. Not perfect, but a really sweet car. I can't seem to post pictures of it since I am old and can't make my pictures small enough for this site. Any interest contact me through email where I can send pictures. Thanks for all your great threads that I enjoy every day. Bob

I sent an email as well and if there is anyway for me to help over here on the east coast, I will.

You gotta do whats right for you Bob but it always saddens me when I see long time owners sell their MG's.

Bob, I feel your pain. I,m sure a number of members to this forum are thinking, this is me in a few years. I turn 70 this year and my TD has been a labor of love the past several years. My fear is now that the project is coming to a close, how many years will I be able to enjoy b/4 I have to make that dreaded decision of parting with it or passing it on. My hope is to pass it on to one of the kids. I also own a 67 Camaro convertible and have two daughters. So perhaps one gets the Chevy and the other get the TD.

Best to you,
Bill

Hey Bob,

Don't let that old age stuff fool you.

I'm 77 and have just started (foolishly, perhaps) to restore a 1934 PA. I don't have any help and no heated garage. Plus, I'm having to buy new tools, most of which I gave away 12 years ago. Pulling the engine and gearbox was in itself, a real challenge!

There are days when I can barely get up, my back is so bad - very common in old age, and like many of us, I'm full of arthiritis. But I'm determined to keep active. Throw into this mix, a lymphatic left leg with a full-length high-compression stocking that I wear all day.

I'm finding that there are days when old age can be no fun. But driving the TF with the windscreen down on a nice day, restores my energy and I plod on! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Bob, why don't you reconsider. If you restored your TD, there's a piece of you in it. You never know what's around the corner. Old age is a state of mind, so don't let it take over. Double up on your vitimins. Double-up on your Viagara. As I said, ya never know what's around the corner.

Thanks all for your comments, I have sent out mail with pictures so I hope you get them. Not quite off the turnip wagon yet, so still looking around the corner.
Due to my location (and lack of garage space), my cars are generally parked out front. Have a number of people stopping by that have cars they want to sell. A 55 TF 1500 (across the street in a garage for 30 years), a 54 1250 with race car history, a 60 Bugeye, another Bugeye (formerly owned by Kevin B.), a restored 64 Sprite, and the list goes on. Also 2 64 TR-4s (maybe shouldn't mention on this thread), and a 76 TR-6 on my trailer to return to my eye doctor. I still love these cars, wish I could have them all.
Description of car to follow, if I can just remember what I did to it in the last 40 years. Bob

Bob, if you'd like to send images and text to me I'd be happy to create a webpage on Ttalk (http://www.ttalk.info/) with the information. Then you could just refer someone to that page. Bud

Gordon TD27667, I tryed your email address but it was returned, gblawson@vaxxine.com?
Bud, I will try yours also. Bob
R.AF. Robert Finucane

thats it.... try it again with just one photo at a time... sometimes digital cameras make for huge files...???
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

If you use a windows based photo program or any other, you can reduce the size(pixels) of the photos. Otherwise they are near impossible to send. I change all of mine to make them smaller in pixel size.
Tom Maine (TD8105)

Getting there. See http://www.ttalk.info/Finucane.htm for Bob's car. More text/images/format is to come. Bud

I finally got up the courage to put a for sale sign on the TD and went in for a nap. Soon awoken by the door knocker, and sold within one hour.
They started to go for a test drive and the fuel pump quit in the driveway. Told them I would take care of that, which I did quickly the next day (it was missing #2 red fibre washer on the inlet side of pump, but it had worked for me for 750 miles)?
After restart the tach quit, then the brake lights stayed on. Is this car trying to tell me something?
Now I wanted to deliver the car, but it started raining. I haven't slept in days, but eventually you have to push the young out of the nest. 42 years of caring and I don't feel it wants to leave me.
Thanks to all for a great group of chaps. Bob

Robert,

As I said, there's a piece of your TD in you, and its sending you a message.

However, if all else fails, be sure to point the new owner to this BB.

....not that i run my life by 'signs', but gee, I think I would have put it back in the garage....

Hope it has gone to a good home and that you are happy with the sale....have really enjoyed your comments and contributions....
gblawson(gordon- TD27667)

I parted with my TD just over a year ago. At 80 I was having real problems getting in and out and was not getting good feed back from my feet related to which pedal I was pushing. I envy you a lot. My little beauty gave me no signals.......hope that doesn't mean she wanted out but one never knows. These nice summer days have been difficult and I still start reaching for a polishing cloth when passing thru the garage. When I drove her up to the closed carrier she ran like a charm. Maybe that was a signal after all.

With warm regards,

Dick Thomas

Hey Dick and all you other old cronies and phonies:-

I wear full compression stockings on both legs. When I struggle to get in and out of my TF (and it always is a struggle), someone often comes up to me says to me ... "why don't you get a Handicap Permit"? to which I respond, "because I'm not fukin' handicapped"!

And I always love the look on their face!

... Then there was the day a friend offerred me to drive his Lotus Elise ... Getting in was bad enough, but getting out took 3 people (but it was worth it! - I want one, irrespective of my "inconvenience", and well worth suffering for).

Sure, I'm stiff and sore and full of arthritis, but hey, old age is a state of mind ~ and I plod on.

I respect your thoughts and its not a pure matter of age but economics of retirement. The buyer bought it for his wife for a 40th anniversity present. I will direct them to this site as its something I have enjoyed visiting several times a day for years now and will most likely continue. Safety Fast, Bob

Robert,

Make sure you keep in touch.

You're one of the regulars here .. don't want to miss you.

BTW, I assume your family name in pronounced fan-u-can-knee.

All the same Bob, the very best to you in your accelerated retirement.

Hey Dick...."still start reaching for a polishing cloth"...

Izzys about the same color
Want to stop by and rub on her for a while?
Cheers Buddy!

DAVID,
I'D BE DELIGHTED TO STOP BY AND GIVE HER A RUB....SHE'S A BEAUTIFUL CAR. HOWEVER, I WASN'T SURE YOU WERE STILL IN BUSINESS. AFTER OVER 100 ENTRYS RELATED TO YOUR NEW GARAGE (CERTAINLY CLOSE TO A RECORD)I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY REPORTS ON THE FINAL PROGRESS OF THE STRUCTURE FOR WEEKS.
WITH WARM REGARDS,

DICK THOMAS

As one old man to another---there is a solution. I have always enjoyed MGs, first car in 1956 a 1953 TD, the an A for H.S. graduation, brief time in collage with an XK120 drophead, then in 1962 an MGB while in the army. Then marriage and kids killed car ideas for a number of years. After getting kids out of school started playing with cars again. I had a number of MGB GTs. When disc problems (two fusions in my neck)caused me to have to get rid of my B GT I remembered MG Magnettes. A good solution to "old bones" still an MG and easier to get in and out of than my wife's Volvo. So there is a way to continue in the hobby. Arch
