MG TD TF 1500 - Shelly Jack

Since the car is done, I'm cleaning up the jack to re paint. Cleaning off the old paint I'm noticing a hint of an odd green color under the black. What is the original color of a TF jack? Any clue of the green color? PJ

I made some purchases while in the UK. Aren't they fust beauties ?
The left one is a Dunlop, all the others are Shelley.
Black or "rust" is the most common colour, some red ones have shown up. I've see various shades of green as well. The blue is pretty unique. Many of them have been repainted, i'm sure.

What I learnt: the value is in the handle, because most jacks come without. But I collected a few as well

I think that you'll find quite a few threads on this topic in the archives. Bud

Be careful Mike. You could get Matthew stalking you :-)

My research suggests the TD/TF Shelley was a 6" 10 DL with a saddle type jacking point & was painted black originally. The Healey used an identical jack but had an L shaped jacking point. The King Dick was also used on the TF. Both jacks are similar though the handles are a different length for the Shelley & the King Dick. It seems none of the jacks pictured above are correct for our cars. Cheers

Pete, you're right of course. They are all period correct except the LJ263 on the right, but none would be factory supplied for the TD. The DL 7 in the middle is closest.
I really like the LJ 31 with the triple spindle, it's great for a low sitting sports car.
I saw quite a few king dick 1077 jacks on auction, but all repros at fairly absurd prices, so I decided to stick with the good old British made originals.

Did somebody say Shelley jacks?
Here are a few that I have accumulated, all repainted their original colour (except the one on the far left which is still in its factory paint). I am guessing the green and other colours would have been commissioned to go with particular makes of car although black seems to be standard for T types.
Many of these are dated which is nice, but none here to suit a TD or TF. I still have the original King Dick for my TF (black). There is an excellent web site for these jacks by Steve Giles who often posts on the MGA board.

Nice collection Mike! I wish I could get the handles for mine.

Paul, do you have a photo of yours?

Cheers,
Matthew.

Looks great Paul!

Terrific to also see the correct Tommy bar PJ as this is even harder to find than the 2 part handles. I've only ever seen one other & that was in an original one owner TF tool kit. Cheers

Matthew, nice collection as well!

Paul, your jack looks just right and seems all complete.

As I said, the handles are tough to get, I will take a shot of what I collected tomorrow. Easy to pay twice as much for the handle than for the jack

And here is the selection of steel handles and wooden grips that I managed to collect. The long one belongs to a Landrover, I think. Would not fit in the MG toolbox, but might well double as a hood prop.
I like the different shapes of the wooden pieces, quite a variety around.
