MG TD TF 1500 - Signal Lights

My TD is early and does not have signal lights. What is the deal, if any, about adding them? I have to buy a wiring harness, so should I get one with turn signals?

Bill - If you want to add turn signals, you should go ahead and get the harness for them. In addition, to do the job right, you will have to get new lampholders (double filliment) for the side lights, turn signal switch and turn signal relay and flasher. Good luck - Dave

Turn signals are a must in modern traffic. In fact here in the UK they are mandatory for T Types.
I found that a white light flashing brighter white did not get the attention I had hoped from other drivers. One solution I've seen is to get a headlamp lens that includes the side light (or running light) in it. Now your torpedo lamp on the wing (fender) can be used for the turn signal only. Or, I managed to get an amber turn light AND a white side light in the torpeedo lamp on my T Type (OK - its a TC but I'm sure you don't mind my being here on the TD/F site). While you are adding the turn signals, if you have a pair of driving lights I would wire them in also as turn signals. I did, and it is a real attention getter. Thanks, Larry

I converted my TD from trafficators (added ietsm) to turn signals in 1967. I did not change the harness but added wires, as shown in the electrical diagram for the TF which you find in the manual. I preferred to use to the standard Lucas relay for brake/direction light switching - even though it's expensive and could be replaced by any two ordinary relays - and I recommend it, but that's up to you.

I like the solution of putting both an amber light and a small white bulb in the sidelight lampholders, but I have not done it. However that does not solve the problem of the back. But with that standard, TF-like, old-fashioned, and not easily recognizable setup I have been around over thirty years with no problems.
