MG TD TF 1500 - Smoking starter motor
After a non start on my 1951 Mg TD my Rescue Organization mechanic turned up. We had strong battery, strong starter motor, good spark and fuel to the carburettors. HE THEN APPLIED HIS MULTI METER TO THE fuel pump WHICH IS LOCATED ON THE REAR CHASSIS AND ASKED ME TO SWITCH ON And pull the starter. Immediately the starter motor began to smoke. We detached the live lead from the battery which is Positive earth. Can you tell me what has happened Mike |

Sounds like the starter was jammed on the flywheel gear and couldn't turn over. There is a square end on the armature shaft which sticks out the end of the starter that is forward.( sometimes there is a cap on it). Pull the cap off if it's there and the square end will be visable. put a wrench on it and turn, it will pop free of the flywheel and you can start the engine. But if it has happened once it will probably happen repeatedly. The fix is to replace the ring gear on the flywheel. Just my analysis, let us know what you find. Cheers, Bob |

How long did you pull the starter switch? Did the switch stick, so the battery terminal HAD to be pulled off to stop the current? You stated good starter motor. Does that mean it STILL DOES roll the engine over, or IT USED TO? If it doesn't roll: Are you sure the engine isn't locked up? If it works, try the hand crank to roll it over. I often push on the belt to tighten it, and then rotate the engine by hand with the fan. If that doesn't work, slip it into 4th gear and rock the car forward to ensure engine rolls over. Let us know what you find. |
