MG TD TF 1500 - Solid copper head gasket
I don't need one but a friend does. Later round hole job. I see a few vendors in the archives but I'd like to hear from some of you that have bought one and your thoughts. Haven't measured the head yet to determine how thick we need but will do so soon. Thanks |

LaVerne, I had one made at Hussey Copper in PA, a shop that does mods to engines would know someplace to have one made. Racers have them custom made all the time. |

I would stay away from the solid copper gaskets. Some have had success sealing them, some have not. My mentor advised me NOT to use them!, He had been building engines since 1960, a reputation as one of the best engine builders of AAA fuel supercharged dragsters engines, also worked as an apprentice on the LSR Bluebird. Hi Guys, Yes, I agree with Len. Unless there is a specific reason, it is probably best to stick with a conventional gasket. If there is a reason, and you must use solid copper, I suggest you lap the head to the block. I use solid aluminium on my race car but that is "dry decked" and runs an alloy head which is re-lapped each time it is removed. (Although that is not very often.) Bob Schapel |

Last time I looked Cometic still makes a MLS (not copper, Multi Layer Steel) gasket for the XPAG. I'd recommend it. I use them on my midget race car. |

A friend had his engine rebuilt and they have the compression to high. Can't get away from the valve knock. Been through all of the usual methods to try and remedy it to no avail. So it's either another head or a thicker head gasket. |

I used a solid copper head gasket because either my pistons are too high or my engineblock is too low. I bought from Gasket Works (www.headgasket.com) and haven't had any sealing issues on a freshly machined head and block. The service from Gasket Works was excellent and the copper was properly annealed to achieve the right softness. Before receiving the solid Gasket, as a makeshift solution I used two normal headgaskets for a 1000 miles, they did show some small leakage but performed good. Maybe you can try that first to see if the engine runs better? |

I'm not a TD/TF owner, but I will second David's comment about looking into the Cometic. Because they are multi-layer, they can build them up to any thickness you want. I have not used one myself, but have heard good results from others. Charley |
