MG TD TF 1500 - Solid State Fuel Pump

What is recommended to replace my TF fuel pump? I am not concerned about originality. Solid state preferred.
Ron Coates

Unless yours is a very early TF, the fuel pump is located out of sight on the chassis just in front of the right rear wheel. Since it's out of sight, any pump with sufficient poop to get the fuel to the front of the car and up to the carbs is suitable. Somebody else will have to tell you how much psi you'll actually need.

I wouldn't go over 4 psi for a street car. PJ

Ron- I have an earlier 54 TF with the SU pump in the engine bay, right rear. I had the pump rebuilt to solid state. I added a Moss Facet pump (around $100) to the right rear location as a back up. Both have worked great for many years. Under the instrument panel I have a 3-way toggle switch to switch between pumps and also to turn off (sort of an anti-theft device).
On an added note, I was on a drive a few years ago when the engine quit. My reaction was to think 'fuel pump', but when I reached under the instrument panel to switch to the facet I burned my fingers. The lousy toggle switch literally melted on the inside. The wiring to the pumps was cool and fine, just the toggle switch. Of all the things that could go wrong with MGs I never thought something like this would happen. Needless to say I installed a much better quality toggle switch.
Oh, something else just dawned on me. When I bought the wiring harness (can't remember the company), it came only with the wire connection to the right rear fuel pump position. This was not a big deal at all and the when I reported it to the wire harness company they were at a loss to explain it. Apparently they had no idea that the TFs had two different pump locations.

Buy a solid state SU pump. Problem solved

The solid-state SU pump is over $400. I was hoping someone could recommend a cheaper after market pump. The location is over the rear right wheel.

Why not just overhaul the original.
I have had my TF for over 50 years, It still has the original fuel pump.About ever 10 years I strip it down fit new diaphragm and points and set as WSM. Never let me down.
Mind you I do carry a rubber bung, rubber pipe and pump ball off a blood pressure monitor to pressurise the tank. Used once only to get a friend home.

I agree with everybody else's comments but, if you insist, this will work. I keep one as a backup but have never had to use it.

Dave DuBois gave these ideal pressures, and flows for TDs and TFs with pumps mounted on the firewall and for TFs with pumps mounted on the chassis in his document "SU FUEL PUMPS 101":

L Type (low pressure pumps). These are found on the T series (TA, TB, TC, TD and early TF) and earlier MGs. They develop up to 1.5psi and have a flow rate of 1.3 pints per minute (9.6 gallon per hour). Original SU #AUA25

L Type HP (high pressure pumps). These are found on late TF, MGA, Z Magnette and early MGBs. They are the same outline and size as the Low Pressure pumps or sometimes come with a longer coil housing (referred to as a High Pressure/Long Body pump). They develop up to 2.7psi and have a flow rate of 1.1 pints per minute (8.4 gallons per hour). Original SU #AUA54
NOTE: Dave's "Fuel Pump Specifications" document states the pressure is 3.8psi.

Some mgtf fuel pump trivia ... MG records are confusing as to when the fuel pump was moved to the righthand frame rail in front of the rear wheel arch:

A) MGTF Service Parts List AKD804 says that the fuel pump was changed to a high-pressure pump with engine #XPAG/TF/31537. (TF1436, 2-Dec-1953).

B) MGTF Service Parts List AKD804 says that pump bracket, wiring harness, fuel pipes, were changed at TF1501. (XPAG/TF/31572, 4-Dec-1953)

C) The NEMGTR says that the fuel pump location was changed at TF1501.

Maybe a few TFs had high pressure pumps mounted on the firewall(?)

I started this thread hoping that someone had done some vendor research specific to the TF.
Apparently, this was not done and is not in the archives. The recommendations here are useful and I thank those that replied, but I decided to do some research myself.

The SU pump from Moss would obviously be appropriate, but it is around $450 plus tax and shipping.

British Parts Northwest sell a German made pump by Hardi specifically for later TFs where the pump is above the right rear wheel. It is electronic, dual polarity and looks like an easy attachment to the mounting plate. It is $184, no tax and free shipping.

My old pump that is leaking, was made by a company in New Zealand. I removed it and the diaphragm is shot. Since the company that made it is out of business, I decided to replace it. I found another New Zealand company, Fuel Flow, that have a distributor in England called PowerSpark Ignition. The pump is made by Fuel Flow, all plastic, and is 54 Pounds plus shipping. I would have been tempted to buy this one, but communication with New Zealand was slow and I had committed to buy the Hardi pump before I finally learned about PowerSpark.

I hope this info is useful to others. I did learn a lot, especially about the pressure and flow requirements and this is important for the later TF.

Ron,

I would never use an electronic fuel pump ever again, I had 2 fail on me two months out of warranty, while traveling. I always go direct to SUcarb (Burlen Services) in the UK for carb and fuel pumps. The correct fuel pump is AZX1331 and is 144pounds or US$197 plus freight for the points version, unfortunately out of stock at the moment. The electronic one is 21pounds more if you must, but they are polarity sensitive. The Moss price at 450 is double the export price at US$222.

Good information Bernie. I would have considered for sure if you had replied initially. Hardi state that the pump I ordered is dual polarity which I assume means not sensitive to polarity.
Ron Coates

I have Hardi pumps in my TD and my Morris Minor. They are a great little pump. Hardi's customer service is the best you can get.
