MG TD TF 1500 - Spark Plug - Archives
'53 - TD - 3/4" reach As it is time to add new spark plugs before trying to start my 28 year stored TD, i checked the archives and came up with tons of numbers and recomendations... seems the common two i found were: NGK-BP6ES which is now NGK#7911 CHAMP - RN5C which is now CHAMP#300 I assume either of these will be suitable? (The local NAPA store gave me the new cat #'s) |

Gordon I have been experimenting with different plug types for a while now. (A cheap source is ebay). At the moment I have Bosch W56 Super Fours fitted and with four electrodes they are the best performing so far. Bosch code W's fit 3/4" XPAG's. I also "won" a couple of W78's which are the same spec but hotter. I'm going to fit them in 1 & 4 cylinders and compare the soot /deposit factor. John |

Gordon, Have not tried Bosch "4 ele" ...but have had very good luck with their platnium series. Far less fouling...but I am also running a "pertronix" pointless ing. now as well. Whilst on the subject,IMHO,....go for Lucas Bumble-Bee wires...some of the "wire kits" offered for our cars are real crap! Stay away from the "Tiwan" made ones...center conductor in these is of very poor quality. Cheers & can't wait to hear "she purrrred to life on the first pull"! David 55 TF1500 #7427 |

Gordon, please be certain that you have the later model head which accepts the 3/4 reach plugs. Lots of late model TD's with early heads, engines, etc. Regards, Dennis |

John, David & Dennis, I am preparing the TF for the run to The Glen in Sept and consider all your above information very pertinent. I have the Pertronix solid state but feel that there is still something lacking. I still don't feel I am getting complete combustion (too much soot on plugs), but that may be because my carbs need a rebuild. I will get some bumble-bee wiring, a new cap and new Bosch W56's. I already have a 40,000 volt coil. This sounds like a winning combination. Again, thanks. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Gord My TF has also a Pertronix unit fitted. Four electrodes seem to work well under all conditions. The engine will now idle happily at around 300 rpm and the plug gaps are preset so they never need adjusting. John |

Is there a Bosch super four for the olser TD head? |

Thank you all... the old plugs that came out had the long reach... Will try the NKG's as they are over the counter at my local NAPA dealer. Will think about the electronic ignition at a later date (loved the unit i installed on my MINI in the late 70's). Also ordered the fan belt ("Oh, is that for a truck sir"?) that was mentioned in an earlier post, and it will be in on Tuesday. Guess if i'm even thinking about "The Glen" inSeptember, i better do the rad hoses as well... "Sighhhhhh" |

Gordon, Your NAPA guys are nicer than mine.... ("Oh, is that for a truck sir"?)..... I get "do ya'll need a belt for the mower-deck on that thing too?"...and that's with the car sitting in front of their "winder" where they can see it! Cheers, David 55 TF1500 #7427 (48" cut / mulching blades) |

Bruce The more I study the Bosch plug codes the more confused I get! They must make a "short" super four. I would check with a plug dealer. The W56's I bought on ebay for $7.50 were advertised as as thus: A set of 4 Bosch Super 4 - 4 electrode spark plugs for the following: Part number W56 Alfa Romeo Giulia Giulietta GT GTV GTA Montreal RZ Spider Audi 100 200 50 80 90 Coupe Maestro Montego BMW 02 1500-2000 Ti Tii E12 5 series Citroen Fiat Lancia Ford OHV & V6 Lotus Mercedes Mitsubishi Peugeot Porsche Renault Saab Subaru Vauxhall Chevette Volvo VW email me for the comprehensive listing. Hope this helps John |

I will never use anything but Champions in my TD, ever again. They are the only one that contribute to a good burn without too much soot. I can tell some wierd stories about plugs in MGs. Ellis |

When did they switch to the 3/4 reach plugs? My engine # is XPAG TD2 LHX12031, my car # is TD11547, which means it was built in 1951 even though it is titled as a 1952. My engine is fitted with 1/2 reach plugs. For 1/2 inch reach I'm using Champion L86C as was recomended on this list. Greg & Grimm |

G&G I show that the switch was made Nov 52, engine xpag/td2/22735. Not unusual for heads and blocks to get swapped (even the engine id tag changed for registration purposes). The early 1/2 inch reach plug heads usually have casting number 22952. Regards, Dennis |

John James, Too bad you didn't leave us your e-mail addr. I have located a site that sells Bosch Plus 4 spark plugs at excellent prices, and in Canadian Dollars (U.S. too), but I need to know the exact part number of the +4 plug you are using and that you mentioned above. Try:- http://www.clubplug.net You can contact me at the e-mail addr at the left. Thanks. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |
