MG TD TF 1500 - Speed Bleeder v Mity Vac
Hi All, Just a thought on bleeding brakes, having just rebuilt the braking system on my TD, I set about bleeding with my Mity-Vac with no success at all. On reading through the BBS archive I picked up various comments re the best method. So decided to invest in Speed Bleeders as a suitable one man operating system. What a great result, in no time I had bled the brakes and was back on the road. On the USA side of the pond I guess that you must be familiar with them, however although they are available in the UK only the more modern applications are available from Demon Tweeks. Speed Bleed produce 1 type for TD/TF 3/8th x 20tpi BSF. Hope that this reference is helpful to someone, it certainly helped me. No connection with Speed Bleed. Russ |

Russ, can not find this thread on Demon Tweeks shop Page. You are sure they have it on stock? Or is there any other sourse in good old Europe? Thank you Guenter |
Guenter |
Hi Guenter, Demon Tweeks do not stock BSF Speed Bleed, I had to order on line from Speed Bleed in the USA. Google - Speed Bleed. The type that you need for a TD/TF is SB3820 at $33.95 this price includes shipping. The thread is 3/8th x 20tpi BSF. Could not find another source in Europe. Russ |

Hi Again Guenter, Have just noticed Larry's posting, Kirby,s on ebay you will have to trace the number SB3820 they are listed at $7 each. Russ |

My address is: Kirby Fleming - 891 South Lake Street - South Amherst, Ohio 44001. Put a note with the money order as to what you wish to purchase, your name, address and email. I will email you when I receive the order. The total cost with shipping is $33." Some of you "know" how I feel about "feebay & paypal" ... I will be sending a PMO to him monday am. |

David, is a US-Bank check OK? 33 bucks includs shipping to Germany? Thanks Guenter |
Guenter |
Guenter, $33 was his quote for "US". Contact Kirby for shipping price to Germany. He did say he would ship international but contact him directly would be best. kz10cubed@yahoo.com. Answers his email very quickly! |

I received my Speed Bleeders today SB3820,(3/8 X 20). Is this the same size as 9mm X 1.25 , as measured with my metric tap&die set? Best regards, Daniel |
D Desmond |
NO, 3/8 BSF is not the same as 9 x 1.25 mm 3/8 in = 0.375 in at 20 tpi 9 mm = 0.354 in @ 20.3 tpi ie.: 0.021 inch smaller and 0.3 moe threads per inch and wrong shape threads ( different shape) |
Don Harmer |
Don, thanks for the info. Sounds like the Speed Bleeder provided will NOT work with TD's. To Russ, how did you deal with the thread difference? To Larry, have you tried to install yours? Best regards, Daniel |
D Desmond |
Speed Bleeders not installed yet. This MG mechanic is busy renovating two bathrooms with his wife. Pictures follow: 1. Speed Bleeder and original bleeder found in the brake cylinder and replaced during rebuild a couple of years ago. Both bleeders appear to be 20 TPI. I could put a thread gauge on the original bleeder. I could not use the gauge very effectively on the Speed Bleeder because of the red thread sealant. 2. Speed Bleeder package front. 3. Speed Bleeder package rear. Larry |

D Desmond, They will work, the TD bleeders need the 3/8 x 20 BSF thread not 9 x 1.25 mm The brake cylinders use the standard British thread system in effect at the time ( BSF or BSP but NOT metric) Your measurements were close but in error on the original bleeders |

Hi guys; I just installed my speed bleeders on the rear of my TF, 3/8 x 20. They are nice. It is indeed a speedy bleed. However....when installing, I was concerned about the firmness needed to screw them in. They are coated with teflon. I worried that the threads were incorrect, but all is OK. Those of you who have not installed them yet, expect firm insertion before you finally get it to the point of "bedding in". Tom |

' Couldn't find 'em to fit my TD but I have speed bleeders on my B and on my C. They differ from mity-vac in that they work! I can bleed all four wheels in about 20 minutes. Love these little gizmos! FWIW, Allen |

Not wanting to miss out on this terrific little item, I rushed off my PO money order to Kirby for a set of the SB3820s and received back an e-mail message from him that indicated that "my friends" on this BB had bought him out of those SB3820s. Many thanks to those of you who were quicker on the draw than I was. He says more's on the way, but couldn't say when. Lov' you guys -- John |

Guenter, While a cheque in US dollars will always work, be aware that the transaction of processing an international cheque can result with all kinds of charges at every (bank) level, and inevitable delays. Don't be surprised if your $50 cheque in US funds, ends up costing you €50. The safest way, is to get a POSTAL MONEY ORDER in US dollars (NOT a bank draught - your account can still be back-charged all the "extras"). Moreover, your order will not be processed promptly, as most US financial institutions distrust anything that doesn't smell and taste like 'American', and your order will be held 'till your cheque clears, and that usually take several weeks. A money order is anonymous and the amount can't be changed. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Mr. Speed Bleed list them on ebey, which is where I bought mine. That allows you to use paypal. "Buy it now" price was $28. Tom |

Kirby told me he got quite a few orders from us here and one big order from a shop that cleaned him out. I feel guilty John ...mine got here saturday. |

Quite okay David, I've learned to be a patient person during this restoration (typically, not easy for me). Plus, if things like this item go to the good folks, like yourself, on this BB, then I have no complaints at all. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to paint the transmission today and then be able to link it up to the engine (hear that LaVerne?). Then onto the frame. And then things really begin to take off.......right? John |

Hi All What a response from this thread! Glad that other owners found it interesting and useful.I did not realise that the guys in the US would not be using them already. I would agree with Tom in Oregon, I tightened the nipples down carefully, needless to say not enough! and had brake fluid on the floor in each corner, however once I had screwed down properly - no problem Russ |
