MG TD TF 1500 - Speed Bleeders

Anyone have any experience with Speed Bleeders as a one man operation for bleeding the brakes?
M Resnicoff

Put them on the TF this year and love them.

Great item - works a treat. Tom

Installed a set last Spring. Quite happy with them. BTW, the product is:
Speed Bleeder Products, Inc., SB3820 3/8 x 20. Bud
Bud Krueger (TD10855)

They work like a charm. I can now bleed my brakes or flush in 5 to 10 minutes by myself.
Don Harmer

sounds like a great product...as a counter point..if you don't have speed bleeders and you need to bleed the brakes..use it as an opportunity to give a neighbor kid or niece or nephew the opportunity "work" on an old car. i've done this twice just with bleeding brakes. their eyes were like saucers..they were fascinated and talked about it for weeks. regards, tom

works excelent, a clever engineered item. Bleeding is now a task of minutes.

Does anyone in Canada know if the Speed Bleeder Product is available the "Great White North", and if so, where?

George, go to https://www.speedbleeder.com/ you can order direct. Mort
Mort TD 1851

Thanks for the info Mort. I went to their "automobile applicatons" and they only list the parts for the 48 TC. There was no listing for the TD or TF. I would expect the parts would be the same for all the "T" models. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks Bud,

I didn't recognize the ID in your previous thread as part numbers. I will look into getting an order away for them. The member's experience sounds very positive. Your help is much appreciated.

Are the 2010 posters in this thread still using them? Are you still happy with the results? Any problems?

Can't find the SB 3820 in their list. Is that a special order? PJ
Paul Jennings

Paul are you looking at the Russel site or the speebleeder.com site? The MG applications are on this page. http://speedbleeder.com/automobile_applications.htm#MG

Thanks Tim, I was on the wrong site. PJ

The special sauce is the ball valve... but more importantly is the seal on the threads.

We've all heard air being drawn into the system past those damned threads.

This looks like a mod that's worth it's bother.

Anyone know the size for the clutch slave cylinder?

And, I just ordered a set.

Will make life easier.

Thanks.

Hmmm, the MGA front drum bleeder (no part number listed) should be the same as the TF front drum bleeder, right?

Tyler
C.T. Irwin

Tyler, check the Moss part numbers for the two OEM ones. Bud
Bud Krueger

The ordering website is a little unclear, do these come in pairs as shown in the photo of the package above? Just want to be sure before ordering.
John Quilter

Every time I've bought them they have come as a set of two in the package.

BTW, Tyler - the models for the Tseries and the MGB are different - T=3820 (3/8"x20 tpi), MGA=3824 (3/8x24 tpi)
Bud
Bud Krueger

Thanks Bud,
If these things are that handy, I'll install them all around on the TF, and the MGA 1500, but I have an MGB rear end on the A, so will use SB1428. I hope the TF front part (SB3820) fits the MGA front brakes (no SB part # listed). It should be the same (I think).

Tyler
C.T. Irwin

No,Tyler, the MGA and MGB use 24 tpi and the TD/TF use 20 tpi.

Bud
Bud Krueger

As Bud suggested above a check at MOSS reveals that the MGA rear brake bleeder is the same as the TD brake bleeder 180-340 but only on early cars (check Moss). But the front bleeder (and rear on late cars) for the MGA is different 180-100.

I did find that "speed bleeder v mity vac" in the archives. Reads exactly like this one.

If I had one car to deal with I would consider trying the speed bleeders again. Tried them on a car about 20 years ago for laughs. Took forever to pump enough fluid through, while adding to the m/c, until I considered the brake fluid "changed".

Nothing like a mity vac type pressure vacuum bleeder to do it right the first time and get ALL the air out. Takes 20 seconds per wheel max., then add to m/c reservoir and go at the next wheel. And so on. Best way to bleed any slave, hands down.

It avoids the perils of overextending the throw of the m/c piston, inherent to all pump type bleeding.

I have been using the exact same generic mighty vac type bleeder for over 25 years. Got from Summit I think. Nothing beats it for getting ALL the air out when first filling a completely rebuilt system, either. No matter what you are doing, it is much faster and more reliable for getting the air out than speed bleeders. Good news is when the speed bleeders eventually get all gunked up with old polluted fluid out at the ends, causing the ball bearing valve and spring to no longer make a good seal while pumping, you can still use a pressure bleeder on them. When buying a pressure vac look for the most basic one you can find, and look for a decent sized waste reservoir. 50 or 75 bucks or pounds will get you a very nice one.

You're right, Tim. Couldn't find my Moss MGA catalog. The rear banjo bolt is the same on MGA as TD/TF. Wonder what thread is on the MGA brake lines? Bud
