MG TD TF 1500 - Spring in Fuel Pump Outlet
Another oddity with 'the53'. As seen in the image below, there is a light coil spring in the outlet valve of the fuel pump. Don't think I've seen that before. Other than that it seems to be a standard LP pump. Bud

Let me try this - has anybody seen this before? Does the spring belong in there? Bud |

Bud - That spring was only used in the high pressure pumps. I have never been able to find out just why it was included in the high pressure pumps only, but the pump works equally well with or without the spring. Before you panic, the high pressure pump will work fine in the TD - I have put many miles on our TD with a high pressure pump mounted in place of the low pressure pump just to see if it made any difference and it worked fine with the original float setting. As an aside, not all high pressure pumps have that spring. I don't know if this was a difference in pumps (there are at least 6 different part numbers used for high pressure pumps, not counting the original, long body style), or if some previous owner in antiquity lost the spring. Many thanks, Dave. Let me get some new disks and gaskets and see how it does its thing. Dave, if I may ask, what liquid do you use for bench testing pumps? Bud |

Bud - Unless the disks in your pump are seriously grooved, you can lap them on a sheet of 400 grit sand paper and reuse them. Put the paper on a piece of glass or smooth metal (I use a sole plate from an old flat iron) and just work them in a figure 8 with your finger. Put a drop or two of light oil on each valve seat to insure a good seal until fluid is pumped through. I use mineral spirits in my test stand, but kerosene also works well. Cheers - Dave |

Dave, Do you ever find that you have to grind the valve seats? warmly, dave |
Dave Braun |
Dave - "Do you ever find that you have to grind the valve seats?" Not very often. One of my competitors made up a valve seat resurfacer for himself and one for me that make it quite easy to dress them up. Mostly though, it is just the disks that get grooved. Cheers - Dave D. |

Dave, you hit it on the nose (But, that's not a surprise). I opened up the pump and measured the diameter of the core. Sure enough 18.5 mm, ergo high pressure. Put some new washers in, lapped the discs and fired it up. Works fine. Thanks. Bud
