MG TD TF 1500 - Stage two engine

What is involved in a stage two engine overhaul on a 1250 engine? And how much of a horsepower increase can I expect? Is there a good book on stage two engine overhauls. Thanks, Greg

The Factory published the "Special Tuning Manual" for the XPAG & XPEG Engines. It is available from many sources (Moss, Etc). This details the exact things to do for stage 1 thru 5 tuning, and what HP improvements you get for each stage.
Stage 2 is essentially porting and polishing the head, intake and exhaust manifolds, matching the ports to the manifold, and increasing the compression by milling the head. It may involve bigger valves on the early head, (I don't remember). As I recall, this gives a 4 to 5 HP boost ( doesn't sound like much but thats about 10 %)
Later things include a different cam, etc)
I have a stage 2 tuned XPEG (1500cc) and the improvement is very noticable. The compression ratio is 9.5 to 1 ( bigger than normal Stage 2), and the head chamber volumes were equalizied and special cam).
It appears that it is now up to about 80 HP from 64 HP from the way it behaves (compared with MGA & MGB's).
