MG TD TF 1500 - Starter Brush Replacement
Merry Christmas to all. After a wonderful day of food, family, and presents, my family is settling in to relax for the night. I slipped away to my office which doubles as my inside shop to work on the starter, and I'm having a heck of a time replacing the brushes. The problem, I can't seem to get the old brushes out. They have been soldered to the copper clamps. I don't seem to be able to heat the solder to the melting point to be able to pull the copper strand wire out. I started with a normal 35 watt soldering iron, with no results. So I moved up to a 180 watt soldering gun. It seems to get close but the end cap and the copper brushes (that I am trying to replace) are acting as a heat sinc. Is there a secret to getting the brushes out? Do I need to worry about getting things too hot and burning wiring anywhere? Any suggestions are welcomed. As with everything else on this restoration (and I use the term loosely), this is the first time for me to try replacing anything on the starter so I'm flying in the dark and need to be taught how to use the instruments. Thank you for your help and patience. And I hope your Christmas was wonderful. Patrick 52 TD (12947) |

Patrick - The original brushes were spot welded to the clamps. The best way to deal with them is to cut the leads off as close and cleanly as possible and then solder the replacements in place. If you have a big chisel tip (about a half inch wide) soldering iron, that will work better than a solder gun. Cheers - Dave PS. Your pump should be picked up by the letter carrier tomorrow and on its way back to you. |

Dave, Thanks for the information. I will get the new brushes attached over the next few days. Also, I recieved the fuel pump yesterday and I can sincerely say you did a great job on rebuilfing my fuel pump. You are a master at your craft. As anyone who has read this BB for any length of time knows, you are the expert when it comes to these fuel pumps. Thank you again, Patrick |
