MG TD TF 1500 - Starter motor mount

The attached photo is of the starter motor mounting location on my XPEG block (upside down). It can be clearly seen that there are three threaded holes for mounting a starter.

The only starter motor I have ever heard of for the XPAG & XPEG is the Lucas LRS 101 M35G starter. As we all know this starter has a two bolt mounting system at 5 inch centres.

I have seen other starters that are a three bolt mount, eg for the Ford Cortina.

Has anyone any knowledge of the origins of the three bolt set up on our blocks?

Is there a three bolt starter motor that will fit our blocks?

If there is something in the archives I couldn't find it.

Kind regards,
Michael

Thanks George. Should I presume they are interchangeable?

The number of teeth on the TC vs. TD/TF pinion are different; you would need to match the TC ring gear, which you can't on an 8" flywheel.

Thanks Tom.

You would probably also have the answer to this question... are the starters on TD/TFs interchangeable with all of the MG midgets - 948cc, 1098cc, 1275cc and the later Triumph based 1493cc?

I am looking at a gear reduction unit that is listed for the Morris Minor 1000, the 1275 Midget and the '1500' Midget. Not surprisingly TD/TFs do not get a mention.

The starter is cylindrical (no piggy back) and has an adjustable mounting plate, so orientation is not a problem. Refer Powerlite RAC801 in attached photo. It is stated to be a replacement for Lucas LRS00101 5" inertia starter motors.

Any thoughts?

Kind regards,
Michael

Yes the starters are the same for A series engines and Spitfires. In fact I bought one from a local parts house by requesting a late MG Midget starter. 80 bucks...lifetime warranty.... no Lucas stamping...labled Bosch.

You can also use a starter from an MG MIDGT,, a lot less expensive, and available at your local auto parts store !

The geared starter that I bought from British Starters was labelled as being for an MG Midget and fitted perfectly. It also had an adjustable mounting plate and does a superb job.

Thanks LaVerne & Steve. I thought that was the case but it is good to get confirmation.

The reason I like the Powerlite is the weight. It is only 3kg.

Weight reduction is expensive, but it is something that interests me. I have just taken delivery of a Dynamator. It is 3.34 kg (without pulley) compared to 6.8kg for the original generator (with pulley).

It all adds up.

For those in Australia the local agent for Accuspark/Dynamator is Rob Roy Classic Road & Track in Victoria. Steve and Cheryl were excellent to deal with and their price was good also. (No association other than happy customer).

Dave, your comment came in while I was typing. Thanks also.

Question already answered, but not only is the TC starter not interchangeable, it is much larger and likely weighs a lot more than the original one. Yes the later replacement Midget starter fits, but the case through screws are from the inside (heads at the drive end) and I think you have to grind the head of the screw a little on some cars. I also fitted the Dynamator alternator, which works very well, though it is slightly larger diameter than the original dynamo giving a trace less adjustment on fan belt tension. I upgraded the wiring and left the 30A ammeter in circuit, though it has never shown much deflection of the needle. Temporarily I also fitted a voltmeter to monitor alternator performance, but didn’t like the big ugly dial hanging on the underside of the dash. I replaced it with a small LED from Gammatronix that changes colour with charge rate / Voltage (red/yellow/green) it weighs next to nothing and I think is worth having.

George, you are correct,, but ther aree some that dont require grinding..
